I really started something with my Aperture question, so I'm starting over.
ColorIt! Cost less than $10 when I first bought it. It's one of fewer than
half a dozen software programs total I have had use for that never threw
out useful bits nor cut back on user control of detail. Another is Graphic
Converter, which has a more current version. Each does something the other
doesn't. Over the decades I have tried other graphics programs, an earlier
PhotoShop among them. I never found iPhoto useful for editing, and I use it
only for creating folders it calls "albums" for my iPad. I use a different
system for my foto files generally.
I am not interested in special effects/tricks and such. I just want clean
fotos, which I don't always get on the fly. With the two programs I
actually use, I get them. ColorIt! lets me get down to a single-pixel level
if I want to. Unfortunately, it hasn't been updated past OS 10.6.8. That
is also the last backward-compatible OS which can access, even if only step
by step, a quarter of a century or more of old data. The minute I cut that
link, I'll need something there.

This is part of the reason for the long story I mentioned earlier. My
laptop is old as computers go and almost full. I was half-planning on
getting it a larger hard drive which could be partitioned, half for the old
system and half new, which I could get used to gradually. Some new software
would come with the latter. I was advised that the laptop was really too
old for this to work well, if at all. So it's being done in a newer laptop,
but not a 2015, for various reasons.

In a week or so I'll have LOTS of questions 8-)

We are in the same boat, both wanting a new computer, and not being able
to afford new! I have been looking at late 2009 to 2011 iMacs online,
and they go for anywhere between $374-$799. I am still saving my
pennies to buy one of these. All can be upgraded to 10.10.

Well, the "new" laptop I'm getting , along with all the extras, but still
including CD/DVD slot and Firewire port, labor, and even Applecare I figure
I'll need for a while, came to $200 over the $1300 tax refund I have
coming.

It's a new (as in not refurbished) 13" 2012 MacBook Pro with twice my old
one's RAM and 5X the memory. I needed one that could basically be my old
one on one side of the partition, with newer software I can learn to use
gradually on the other. A 15" would have no CD/DVD slot nor Firewire port,
which latter I need seldom but then urgently, and I don't want more
separate pieces of equipment or adapters cluttering up limited space, to
say nothing of saving quite a chunk of money. A newer one would be
"unhappy", if even capable of letting me keep my connection to older data.
There's no way I could physically make room for another separate computer,
so I'll just have to get used to a 13 instead of a really old 15.

My really old G4 seems to be a tougher breed, as it still chugs along and
will open any physical media I've had in decades since the large floppies
from early apple //e days.

And for those who think that was long ago, my first acquaintance with
computers goes back to calling up the university mainframe and putting the
phone into a kind of cradle to access the program I was working with(NOT
something I wrote, mind you) back in the mid 70s.

I was a freshman at UBC in 1968, taking a course in creative writing
(which I'd later major in) and I wrote a sci-fi story and took it to the
engineering building and typed it out on punch cards and had it printed
out (printouts were free). The woman at the desk looked at me
suspiciously because I rilly rilly din't look like an engineer (not in
1968). Anyway, it was a pretty sopho^H^ freshmanic story, but I got a A,
I think, just for being weird.

You seem to have paid a lot for your new Mac. I hope it works out for
you. I see used ones on ebay that would probably do what you need.

The computer itself isn't all that expensive, but extras add up. They're
going to do things I can't do myself.
