#28172 — DiskWarrior 5 Manual?

FromFred Moore <fmoore@gcfn.org>

SubjectDiskWarrior 5 Manual?
Message-ID<mdsrj4$at6$1@dont-email.me>
Can anyone tell me where I can get the DW5 manual? I have checked the
Alsoft site and Googled, but AFAICT you can only get it from the
thumbdrive they send you. I'd like to read through it before ordering. TIA

Why not just ask their sales department for it?:

Hmm. Well, that's an interesting thought. Though if the company doesn't
post a link to the manual on the site, I don't know why sales would be
authorized to give it out; but stranger things have happened.

I'll give it a try. Thanks for the suggestion.

The way you worded it above is how you should ask them, since you seem
to indicate you ant to order, but would like to read the manual first.
If it resulted in a sale, I don't see why they wouldn't at least
consider it.

(Wow, this has turned into instant messaging!)

Excellent point and I just emailed sales using the language above, so
we'll see. I still don't understand why they don't have a clear link on
their site. It's like they want to hide it. I'm sure I'm not the only
person who has ever wanted to read the manual before purchasing, despite
being a current user so I'm familiar with the product.

Agreed. You might want to make that suggestion to them as well. : )

How radical a change is there from version 4 to 5? The manual for the
former is available through a Google.

Bigtime change in the interface... I mean, it essentially works the
same way, so using it isn't an issue - but it's a radically different
app.

what information in the manual do you want?

it's not as if disk warrior is hard to use.

Could it be simply that DW is intuitive and informative enough that a
separate manual is not needed?

On a side note I established a software company in the 80's.

It was called: Alsoft.

(Registered co. in Quebec and Canada).

Heck, most people won't read the manual AFTER purchase.

Okay, here's the direct quote of the response from the Alsoft NoSales
department:

"I do not believe that we have a published copy of the manual. If you have
questions, please contact our technical support department. They can be
reached at tech.support@alsoft.com

"They may be able to provide the documentation. If not, they can address
your questions regarding the software."

They have indeed published a copy of the manual because it's on the USB
flash drive as mentioned at least once on Macintouch! But suppose it
wasn't, they'd release a product without any manual?!? Oh joy.

The bozo from NoSales could have contacted tech support and gotten the
link or forwarded my email to them to answer. But NO, let the
prospective customer dig elsewhere for the information. Their sales
director should now qualify for a great deal of unpaid leave.

Against my better judgement, I'll now send my question to tech support
and report back.

why do you need the manual? do you have a specific question?

the app is not hard to use. in fact it is so easy to use that it
doesn't really need a manual at all.

I'd like to see what they have to say about their product. I want to
know exactly what they claim it can do and how it goes about it. Not
that the manual will necessarily address these, or address them
thoroughly, but I'd like to see what they have to say.

Also, I'd like to get the specifics about installation and making the
recovery drive. Yes, I could wait for all this till I have the product,
but why can't I read about it beforehand? I don't think this is
unreasonable, but Alsoft doesn't seem to want to be forthcoming.

that's what the web site is for.

probably because it doesn't really matter.

the product works exceptionally well, is not hard to use and is now
even better than it used to be.

Is it just me, or is this a non-issue? I mean I miss the days when
software came with hefty printed manuals, and some were actually well
written and useful. Especially game manuals - the last decent one I got
was with Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri. But is there any real mystery in
DW? I don't believe I've ever read the manual on any of the versions
I've used from classic days through to OS X. I'm not sure I noticed the
existence of a manual for any of the OS X versions I've owned, heh. A
PDF somewhere on the disc, maybe.

I suppose if you had *never* used it, you might be a little more
interested in learning more about it before plopping down cash for it. I
can see where he's coming from. And he's really not asking for a lot. If
there is a manual, it really shouldn't take much effort to send him a
copy to secure the sale.

Yep. My newest copy of DW is a bit behind, but not much has changed.
Here is it's manual
