My wife kept getting the Ask toolbar installed somehow. It's the

It's a bit like Apple, which has pre-checked tick-boxes, for mailing
lists they maintain, and lists managed by their unnamed 'partners'.

I don't mind the odd mailing list thing showing up if I miss a checkbox
(and in the end, it's up to me to read that stuff). They usually honour
the "unsubscribe" link, and my spam button works very well.

The toolbars that take over the browser, that's nasty.

My sister loves them. I take enormous pains to install Firefox, make
sure its clean and lovely and she has it stuffed with toolbars and
other "Helpers" in a couple of days.

My mother-in-law used to do that.. I told her "you broke the internet..
you fix it". And started making her learn to reinstall windows.

That fixed the issue.

I tried that. She just suffers. Not silently.
Then she buys in "expert help" who are not as good as me.

I've thought of this. *Often*. But I've never been entirely sure she
could "find the Internet" if I buggered her about too much. Even were
I to install FF and label it *THE INTERNET* she may get lost.
Or perhaps I grossly underestimate her.
 That is possible isn't it?

Well we ARE talking about someone who ends up "breaking the internet" and
without Kim Kardashian's help either..

No, it is nothing like that. At all.

I have installed the latest Java 8 update 40 and it didn't offer me
anything. I suspect the difference is that I installed the JDK, not the
JRE.

There is also a setting right at the bottom of the Java Control Panel's
Advanced tab: "Suppress sponsor offers when installing or updating
Java", which may be new as of Java 8 update 40. I've enabled that
option, in case Oracle decides to poison the JDK installer in future.

Can't Oracle just over-write it in an update any time they fancy
enabling "partner" software?

I just installed it - was not asked for the ask toolbar and it wasn't
installed. Maybe Adobe fixed that in the past day.

I just installed it and was very clearly asked if I wanted the ASK
toolbar and homepage, both boxes that I unticked before proceeding.

And now in the Java control panel Advanced tab it does ask if I want to
suppress future crapware, whereas it didn't before this update.

When did you DL it?

Was it from "jre-8u40-macosx-x64.dmg"?
