A person can be or not be in a particular state of mind. Fine. Let's not discuss the open question of whether he can be in degrees of that state. Let's assume you are right and it is crystal clear binary for the sake of argument. However, this on its own does not tell us how to judge whether a person is or is not in some particular state. This is where evidence or criteria need to come into the picture. And when these things come into the picture, guess what else often comes along for the ride? Yep, action! Whether someone really believes p is about what that person does or is prepared to do. If confronted and he or she declines to put his or her money where his or her mouth is (this is an expression not to be taken literally) then we can question whether the person really believes p. A person can suppose they believe p without actually believing it. They believe they believe p but that is not equivalent to believing p. People can be mistaken about themselves in quite fundamental ways. In war, for example, many people find they don't have the courage they assumed they had. Some of the biggest mouths prior to the test of action have the least. In your idea of a want you are not fully understanding the distinction between the state itself and the evidence for the state. If you did, you would not dismiss the question of action so confidently. > For instance, a person could really be wanting a hamburger really bad, but > she's on a diet so she won't buy one. Now, according to you, the lack of > action says something about the level of desire, which is false logic. > No, the lack of action leaves the question open. Her wanting the hamburger might well show in other ways. She stares longingly at it, she drools. Look, I don't want to run a completely behaviourist line on this, sometimes people can have states of mind that do not actually show in action. But when it is challenged it usually does. Some people who lose all bodily control can still have thoughts and beliefs and it is difficult to test for whether they do or don't have those thoughts. But it is usually not impossible. In The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, about Elle editor Jean-Dominique Bauby who suffers a stroke and has to live with an almost totally paralyzed body; only his left eye isn't paralyzed. He writes a book using winks. A wink is an action, it can release money. > Likewise, and more as an analogy to this topic, she may not be on a diet, > and really want a new hamburger, but walks past McDonalds and keeps walking > until she gets to Wendy's further down the road. > > Again, her lack of action towards McDonalds say exactly *nothing* about her > desires for hamburgers. > > > 4. If a person is capable of action that demonstrates commitment and fails to do so, and, other things being equal, this is evidence of a lack of a want. The connection between belief and action is much more conceptually linked than you imagine. -- dorayme

If I want ice cream, I need not prove it to anyone. If you don't *believe* me when I say that I want ice cream, that's irrlevant to me and means absolutely nothing. But when you, as the OP, flat out states that no, I do *NOT* want ice cream, then you're a liar. Not a liar because we objectively can judge whether or not I want ice cream, but because you are making an explicit statement regarding the desires of another person, information that by default - you can not possess. Here, let me show it to you: - You, dorayme, wants to have sex with your mother. See? Now, your reply may be that no, you don't actually want to have sex with your mother (and, eww), and following your logic, I would again claim that no, you DO want to have sex with your mother, since there is no proof provided by you that you don't. > And when these things come into the picture, guess what else often > comes along for the ride? Yep, action! Indeed, and action has been present since we know full well that I have bought news readers in the past. There is no shortage of me putting my money where my mouth is when it comes to news client software. You're confusing "I want a new news reader, but not Signal" with "I want Signal, but I won't pay for it". There is a world of difference between those two statements. > Whether someone really believes p is about what that person does or is > prepared to do. If confronted and he or she declines to put his or her > money where his or her mouth is (this is an expression not to be taken > literally) then we can question whether the person really believes p. Only if person A says "I really want ice cream" and then refuses to pay money for ice cream when given a chance. If the person says "I want a snack" and refuses to buy an ice cream, then his first claim still is as valid. He wants some snack, just not ice cream. > A person can suppose they believe p without actually believing it. Uh, no. > They believe they believe p but that is not equivalent to believing > p. Not according to your "logic". > Her wanting the hamburger might well show in other ways. She stares > longingly at it, she drools. Those are parameters you are not aware of. Let's say you're on the phone with her, and the only information you have is her explicit statement of wanting a hamburger. According to you, if she does not go out and buy one, she doesn't want one. That's your logic. > Look, I don't want to run a completely behaviourist line on this, Well, thank god. > sometimes people can have states of mind that do not actually show in > action. It is a pity, it sounds to me that you have some intelligence but little control of your intellect. There is *nothing at all* of the scholar in you. Just blasting and rudeness and aggression. It is quite sad really. OK, that's the impatience. Now the misunderstanding. There is a distinction between a state of a person and evidence of that state. Action is one of the things that let people themselves and others know about their states of mind. It is true that we often think we know things about our states of mind by simple introspection but this is really questionable. I have given you an example of people thinking they are one thing but finding that when the real test comes they are not in that state. Your confidence in you wanting a new usenet reader is not all the evidence there need be of it and you could find that you are even wrong about yourself. I am not saying you are wrong, I am saying your introspections are poor evidence of your commitment. Your actions in the future will say much louder what the nature of your of your commitment is. > Here, let me show it to you: > > - You, dorayme, wants to have sex with your mother. > I note the underlying anger you are feeling. Once can be a mistake, twice is a lie. Clear as that. You keep coming back to "evidence" and keep missing the most important part of it - you want to claim that there is no evidence for my explicit statement that want a new news reader (in spite of there actually being evidence) while totally missing that there also is NO evidence for the OP's explicit statement that I do *NOT* want a new newsreader. > Action is one of the things that let people themselves and others > know about their states of mind. Evidence, you say? Geez. I'm blown away with all this uncalled for
doubt. And demands that someone put their money where their mouth is.
It's so divorced from rational human behaviour... I've got to ask -
why, oh why, has it come to mean so much here?

The only point I’d add here is that nobody (at least not I) wants anything more from the loud mouth than to acknowledge reality. It was quite well known to many historians (including soldier/writers) of the storming of Normandy and the fight to Berlin that the most surprising people would show great courage and others would collapse. I am not one to look down on people in war who are overwhelmed by the traumas of battle, just in case anyone thinks this. It is part of the human makeup, influenced by all sorts of things. The point is that before the test of battle, many of the previous assessments of character proved wrong. In both directions, some people proudly surprised themselves, others were bitterly disappointed with themselves. -- dorayme

Ye sit is, fool. The "putting her money where her mouth is" refers to her having an opportunity to do something for the environment (by getting her car fixed). That she wouldn't consider that, shows that her "commitment to the environment" was all talk. Like your desire for a new newsreader. -- "Freedom is sloppy. Great argumentative skills, there. > The "putting her money where her mouth is" refers to her having an > opportunity to do something for the environment (by getting her car > fixed). That she wouldn't consider that, shows that her "commitment to > the environment" was all talk. Not at all. As long as we have no information about what other things she may do and a deeper understanding of what her commitment entails. It is clear from the anecdote that her decision not to get her car fixed was based on economy. She may be super-commited to saving the environment while at the same time lacking funds to do it by fixing her car. She may be working as a volunteer for green peace as far as we know. As I said, the anecdote lacks a thousand information points for the reader to take a stance on whether or not she is willing to put her money where her mouth is. In short - she may not be able to invest in repairs of her car because she has spent all her free money building a wind farm. > Like your desire for a new newsreader. Well, yes, but not in the way you think. Just as your supposed niece, you or Darrin does not have the information required to make a conclusion. This is the infromation you have thus far from me: 1. I have written a blog post back in 2013 about the improvements I want from Unison, which is currently lacking ciritical features 2. Since I own Unison, it is clear that I am willing to pay for a news client 3. I have explicitly stated that I want a new news reader 4. I have explicitly stated that the OP's project does not match my need In spite of all that, the OP claims that I do not want a new news reader, and when he did that the second time he was lying. Simple as that. -- Sandman[.net]

If she lacked money or had spent it on other environmental programs then it would have been a poor anecdote to offer as an analogy. The fact that I concluded with "So much for her commitment to the environment" made the point. -- "Once you adopt the unix paradigm, the variants cease to be a problem - you bitch, of course, but that's because bitching is fun, unlike M$ OS's, where bitching is required to keep your head from exploding." - S Stremler in afc

The point is that the anecdote does not provide enough information to be analogous. As I said earlier, these are my statements: 1. I am willing to pay money for a news client 2. I don't want to pay money for Signal First off, you should note here that point 1 and 2 are not in contradiction with each others at all. And in your anecdote, we have: 1. 2. I am not willing to pay money to repair my polluting car See how there's a line of information missing that would make point 2 contradict point 1? > The fact that I concluded with "So much for her > commitment to the environment" made the point. I know nothing about her commitment to the environment or her reasons to not repair her car. -- Sandman[.net]

You probably know this (and, btw, would be most upset if any other Mr Literal accused you of lying like you so freely accuse others) The fact is that she *did decline* by her words and actions. Why can't you see this? What is it about these really simple everyday examples that you cannot see? What is going on? What part do you not understand properly? Are you asking for Map location of where she declined? Why does a shake of the head and the clear implication from "not be worth it" not do it for you? You are a very *difficult* man! This is simple logic. What we have on one side of the analogy is my
statements:
1. I am willing to pay for a new news reader
2. I don't want to pay for your news reader
In the analogy we have:
1.
2. I don't want to pay to get my car fixed
See the missing information in point 1 that would make point 2 relevant? In
short, what Tim is trying to get at is this:
1. I care very much about the environment
2. I don't care about fixing my polluting car
And thus creating an inconsistency between the two statements, but as his
anecdote was told, it could just as easily be read as this:
1. I care very much about the environment
2. Unfortunately, I can't afford to get my car fixed
or
2. I had no idea that "blue smoke" was supposed to be more pollution than
regular smoke?
Or what about
2. Fine, my car is polluting, I'd rather get a new car when I can afford
it than to sink money into this piece of junk. Unfortunately, I need to
continue using it meanwhile.
In the same vein - you guys (and the OP) want to twist my clear and simple
words to mean this:
1. I want a new news reader and is ready to pay for anything
2. I won't pay for your news reader
This is *NOT* what has happened, and NOT what was being said. Reread the
thread or consult the first example above.
> What part do you not understand properly? Are you asking for Map

You're failing basic reading comprehension. We're looking for some
information in the anecdote that means that his niece is unwilling to put
her money where her mouth is. Since "putting money" is in regards to her
car, we need to established that her "mouth" has been talking about fixing
the car.

"Difficult" in this context means logical, factual and correct, I imagine.

There is no missing point 1 in Tim's analogy. It is just missing in your brain. You simply cannot process information that is buried one level deep in human communication. I have elsewhere explained the missing *teensy weensy bit of subtlety* I will do it again because you seem to be the sort of bloke, like that Jamie character, who won't get anything until it sticks out like dog balls. The number 1 is a virtual "I would do whatever I can within reason to protect the environment". This is a clear implication, along with her understood almost certain assent to that she is no hypocrite, from her other statements (which you snip for unknown reasons - O, yes, of course, we know... you are not realising the significance of these statements in your headlong rush to literalism, penadantry and argumentativeness). -- dorayme
