I recently migrated the wife's MacBook to her new MacBook Pro via TM and then
inherited the old backup set by the new machine.

The only ancillary tasks were to re-enter the license keys for some software.

My recollection from recovering from a dead hard drive in 10.6 is that I
used a system install dvd (10.6.3) and a TM backup and then had to run
all the system upgrades to bring it back up to my old system running
10.6.8. Does a re-installation using the recovery partition and a TM
backup automatically put you back in the latest updated OS?

No, it makes a clone backup to a disk. Or a "smart update" of only
changed files to the clone. Or a disk image file, if you paid for it.

It keeps no history chronological changes or snapshots. Time Machine or
a reasonably configured NAS does that.

What's NAS.

If he only has version Mac OS 10.4, does he even have Time Machine? I
vaguely remember that he doesn't. And I asked him and just got a
reply and he doesn't think so.

He also can't boot from the backup because it's not firewire. It's a
USB drive holder and drive that I had around. I bought him one, with
his money, with firewire, and then after I ordered it, I found a notice
somewhere that that model won't boot, so I was looking for another
model, but something slowed that down and I never got it.

Dunno for sure but I think hiring a rapper to help out with a backup
restoration problem would be both very expensive and not very effective
(with apologies to NAS if I've underestimated his computer skills).

I've just opened my copy of SuperDuper. In the Windows menu there are
items for Scheduled Copies and Show Log. The first should list all the
copies that are scheduled, the second should tell you what happened on
recent runs.

Maybe I'm not opening it correctly. He has an icon at the right end
of a long row of icons along the bottom and I clicked on that. I
think.

Later tonight, I'm going to start from the beginning with him.

Not a long line, just a padlock and three buttons on my version.

The thing you're missing is that the Schedule button is greyed out until
you have selected a source and target.

But, as I said before, the Windows menu has items where you can find
what was previously scheduled and done.

Yes. We didnt' get together last night after all, not even via Team
Viewer. . I wanted to listen to Old Time Radio. We will eventually,
and I'll try out all the suggestions.

Thanks, and thanks all.
