#21253 — ICS added to Calendar without confirmation...

SubjectICS added to Calendar without confirmation...
Message-ID<let1qu$sat$1@dont-email.me>
I received an email that had an ICS attachment. The odd thing is that
I never clicked on that ICS attachment, and yet the event got
automatically added to my calendar without prompting me for
confirmation. Is there a way I can prevent that?

Using Apple Mail and Calendar on Mac OS X (Mavericks)

Don't use Apple's Mail and ICS attachments won't get added to your
calendar.

I don't use Apple's Calendar program, preferring the Google Calendar
because it accessible on my Android phone, my laptop, and my desktop.

Once you buy into the Apple walled garden, you take what they give you
the way the give it to you.

Indeed.

Okay, but when you do get an email with an ICS attachment in whatever
email program you use, how do you move this ICS attachment to Goggle
Calendar to create an event?

Sync the Google calendar with the Apple one ?

That's the setup I have now. Apple Mail notifies Apple Calendar which
is synced to Google Calendar.

Apple Mail --> Apple Calendar --> Google Calendar

Ultimately, it is only Google Calendar I'm interested in. The only
reason I have Apple Calendar in the middle is so that when I click on
an ICS attachment in Apple Mail, Mavericks adds that event to Apple
Calendar which then updates Google Calendar.

If there was a way I could eliminate Apple Calendar, I would.

True ... but you can just leave the apple calendar unvisited and
ignored.... until there's a solution down the line.

I would like to ignore Apple Calendar, but unfortunately, as I
explained in my original post, Apple Mail, upon receiving a message
with an ICS attachment, has automatically created an event in Apple
Calendar without consulting me first (I did not click or double-click
on that attachment).

There are two problems with this:

 - A user could potentially send me a malicious ICS attachment that
could create thousands of events in Apple Calendar (and hence Google
Calendar).
 - I'm unable to delete the event because, when I try, Apple Mail
threatens to notify the original sender (a friend of mine) that I have
declined their request.

There's gotta be a way to prevent Apple Mail and Apple Calendar from
behaving like this.

Tell it not to do that.

In my experience, it is google calendar that is the problem and auto
adds events willy-nilly from G+

Turn off the setting (which you turned on at some point) to automatically
add events to the calendar in Mail.app. The default is to not add them.

That's why I have not joined G+.

Then it is not mail doing it. Do you use gmail?

Short of that, turn it on and quit mail, then turn it off. Maybe the setting
got borked.

You don't. Or at least I don't. I have been able to drag ICS
attachments to my copy of BusyCal, but it's $50 and the current version
sucks. There's also Fantastical which can sync to Google Calendar. I
don't know if it does drag/drop of ics files.

If you have others sending you ics files, you're best bet is to live
with this new behavior and move on.

In the Mail preferences, the General pane:
Add invitations to Calendar: Never/Automatically

Don't know what default is, mine is set to Never...
