Can anyone recommend an interactive globe? Years ago I had one that was
great, but I forget the name and it doesn't exist anymore. I tried
using Google Earth but it keeps crashing on me.

As you were in Google's vast domain anyway, did you try "interactive
atlas globe world" as a search key in the www.google.com front page?
If you hate Google, you could try:
 www.dogpile.com
 www.mamma.com
 https://duckduckgo.com/
 https://www.ixquick.com/
www.ebizmba.com/articles/search-engines and find one you like, or
even try putting "search engine" into the WikiP search slot at:
 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Search_engines for loads of good
information.
I would have done some of the work for you but I honestly can't be
arsed and I don't have a clue what you need from your choice of atlas
so I truly could not recommend anything.
I did, for my own giggles, try Googles's search and they have
*thousands* of hits. At least one of them should be useful.
 Have fun,
                    J.

Use a tool like AppCleaner to remove Google Earth, then re-install.

I had a spate of GE crashing on my prior Mac. But cleaning it out
completely and DLing and re-installing sorted it out.

Just make sure you locate and save all your saved locations and other
data first.

Thanks. I did remove Google Earth with CleanMyMac and reinstalled it,
but it's still crashing.

Okay. I don't know Cleanmymac.

Run Cleanmymac again to clean out G.E. and then check if

         ~/Library/Application Support/Google Earth

is still there. If it is, delete "Google Earth" from Application
support and try installing again.

Google Earth is the crashiest app I have ever used on the Mac. Try
maps.google.com on your favourite web browser. It has never failed me
yet.

Following up to my own post. I tried clearing out every Google-related
file from /Library, ~/Library/Caches, ~/Library/ApplicationSupport, and
~/Library/Preferences, and reinstalling the latest GE from a fresh
download.

After firing it up I zoomed in to Novosibirsk and entered street view
on a random street. As soon as I tried to move along the street I got
the spinning pinwheel, and then a crash. All of this took about 30
seconds. I usually average about 5 minutes before a crash. And that's
how it's been since day one for me on two different Macs.

Is it anything less than garbage for anyone else?.

No issues here - and I use it a lot. I wrote an app to make .kml files
from all of my (very many) GPS data recordings. That puts "pushpins"
into the Google Map so I can quickly locate GPS recordings of interest.

I use it to map all my hiking, orienteering runs, and so on. Travel too.

I use it when I'm curious about ... well just about anywhere.

I did have a lot of crashes on the prior iMac for a while. I finally
deep cleaned everything to do with G.E. and then it ran fine.

IIRC it also was sensitive to errors in saved data (pane on the left),
so judicious offloading (you can save them) and deleting of those might
solve the crash issue as well.

Does it do anything that Google Maps doesn't do?

Much faster.

Keep your own data in it.

Deeper zoom (useful where there's sufficient resolution)

Time of day sim.

Callup of past sat imagery.

Overlay of 3rd party data (this is endless - marine, weather, aviation,
topo maps, etc. forever and ever).

UTM coordinates

Line measuring tools (yes, GMaps has that but not as nice)

Overlay capability (eg: maps, photos, whatever).

GPS playback

Astronomy mode

Moon, Mars surface maps.

and on and on and on and on and on and on... even a flight simulator
(best with a joystick).

OTOH, Google Maps has the traffic display, terrain (relief - though not
very high resolution).

I use both of course, but G.E. is the heavy lifter.

G.Maps is better for things like road maps, traffic and so on.

If I want to "travel" along street view, I prefer Google Maps app, but I
also have a new Street View app that's not bad. It now takes me 3-4
different apps to approach the functions that were all in the original Maps
app, but that's the bad part of my new iPad, which is so good at many other
things and so light.

Google Earth has advantages regarding bookmarks over google maps app, but
Apple maps makes anything else look great 8-)
