I recently upgraded to v. 10.0.1 of GarageBand, and it seems that when you use the "Share" option "Burn song to disk" and you choose the compressed option, it no longer saves as an MP3, but in a format called "m4a." iTunes recognizes these files, and SoundCloud recognizes them, but I've discovered the Amazon's CreateSpace self-publishing site does;t like them, and it looks like the copyright office isn;t going to like them, because it does;t list them as an acceptable format for upload. Both these sites accept AIFF files, and that's still an option in the new version of GB, but I can't believe there's no way to share a file as as an MP3. I looked in the preferences and didm;t find anything.

So is there a way to export a song as an MP3 in the new version of GarageBand? Failing that, is there anything out there that will convert an M4a file to an MP3?

Audacity (free sound editing program) will do it.

Armadeus Pro is, in general, a lot more user friendly than Audacity, but
the latter is free. And doing what you want is really simple and quick
on Audacity. I use it constantly to convert youtube radio or talking
head interviews for iPod listening.

Quite true, and I use Amadeus pro for a lot more things than file
conversion, so it works out great for me that I don't have to pursue a
lot of other tools. That said, I still have a lot of audio
manipulation tools.

Talking conversion from mp4 to mp3, I have to do this so it will play
in my car and the only thing I think will do it on my computer with
present resources is MPEG Streamclip. "Export to other formats"

Neither my QT7 Pro nor VLC nor Handbrake seem able to do it. I post
this to help me remember to always go straight to MPEG Streamclip.

I missed the original post. itunes will conver mp4 audio to mp3.
Quicktime will let you save the audio from an mp4 video. VLC will let
you save audio from a mp4 video as well.

I've certainly done it in VLC and Quicktime, though VLC is more fiddly
than is worthwhile and Quicktime may have required more steps.

I was just trying to remember how I did it and I believe it was with
Audacity.
