Not the solution for the average user. ;-) I have gone to using slrn
with nano as an editor in Terminal. Not as elegant as MTNW, I grant
you, but it gets the job done. Usenet has declined so much that I can't
justify paying for an NNTP client. The S/N ratio has become truly
atrocious. slrn's scoring weeds almost all of the spam out with a few
elegant rules, though, so I appreciate that.

Same here, but with vi, which I'm perfectly comfortable with.

Me too but while I'm comfortable with VI, I prefer TextWrangler.

Me, I'm comfortable with Snow Leopard, MT-NW and a bed consisting of a
mattress on milk crates, a car whose seats go right back carrying a
pillow that can be put across the protrudent central gear and
handbrake (the legs can then be comfortably rested across the driving
seat to the feet area of the passenger section) and a smaller pillow
that is perfect for the neck/head for a snooze.

My car is long enough to sleep front to back with a foam mattress I used
for camping, though I've never actually done it, just figured it out when
setting up camp for a weekend event was getting to be too much. I wimped
out and now use motels with wi-fi, showers, and better shelter in
thunderstorms 8-). However, I'm still happy with MTNW and 10.6.8 .

In the late 60's I had VW beetles, if you left the back of the back
seats at home you could camp by unclipping the backs of the front
seats off (they were not bolted) and sticking them under the car. With
a couple of tabletop rectangles over the front seats and a rolled out
mattress, hey presto a double bed and you could see the stars through
the back window! <g>

But I agree, me too with motels and hotels these days!

The author of slrn, John Davis, also writes a damn good text editor
(jed). It's a character cell terminal program only, though.

Ah, I didn't know jed was by him. I'll have to take a look at it (though
ever CLI editor seems to suffer froma fatal flaw for me, they're not
vim :)

You mean the TextWrangler "edit" command-line tool? Doesn't that force
you to switch between the Terminal application and TextWrangler whenever
you want to view or create a message? I'm not sure I would like that
context switch.

With TextWrangler's command-line tool installed I simply set
    setenv EDITOR "/usr/bin/edit -w"
    setenv SLRN_EDITOR '/usr/bin/edit -w "%s"'
    setenv SLANG_EDITOR '/usr/bin/edit -w "%s"'
in my .tcshrc file (I know, I should be using bash but old habits are
hard to break).

Sure. My question was about switching between Terminal and
TextWrangler...

What switch? I followup or post and TW opens the quoted article.
I enter my text, save and close the window and I'm back in slrn with a request
to verify my desire to post.

Try it yourself and see. At no stage do you need to click between TW and
slrn windows to effect the switch in control.

In .slrnrc

    set editor_command "edit --wait --resume +%d '%s'"

the --wait and --resume combination means that when you do a post or
followup you get a new TW window.

cmd-S and cmd-W when you are done puts you straight back at the slrn confirm
posting prompt.

I also have

    set abort_unmodified_edits 1

so that on an editor exit without writing any changes slrn quits the posting.

Now that I think about it, this won't work for me, since I run slrn on a
single machine, which I SSH into from multiple locations. So
command-line or bust for me.

Still, thanks for the info. Much appreciated.

I used to do that. Now I run slrn locally on each machine, but store all
of slrn's files on Dropbox, so it's the name file.
