Ok, I'm at a loss. I just bought NewsTap for my 5th Gen. iPod touch,
tried to connect and load news.individual.net's group list, the progress
indicator says it is, then downloads descriptions, but after that...
nada. And there is nothing in the "Groups" tab.

What gives? The debug log in NewsTap reveals nada useful info either.

Nevermind, worked the third time. Finally the "Groups" tab is populated
when I go there and try to add a group. Did I do something odd the first
two times? I don't know.

You just needed to be patient enough for all the groups to load...
depending on your connection speed, it can take a few minutes.

It's certainly not the most intuitive piece of software I've ever used.
I do wish someone would write a decent Newsreader for the iPad.
I use MacSoup on the iMac and it's brilliant, maybe we could persuade
Stefan to port it to the IOS?

I'm with you, but to be fair, part of what makes MacSOUP so excellent is
how well it lends itself to the Mac UI paradigm. I can't see it
translating into touch without losing much of what makes it MacSOUP.

comp.* is one of the bigs. Any decent server should carry it. Don't know 
about misc *. This is definitely not a phonegroup anyway so everything 
iphone thats not about syncing data and such is so very off topic here 
and should be posted in comp.mobile then...

ISP did.  Then again, if the new groups aren't being added, that's 
probably not the case.

If ISPs were smart, they'd be going the other way.  Usenet is better 
seen these days as the original content delivery network.  It remains 
baffling to me that things like podcasts are mainly distributed over the 
web.  Many a good video podcast went belly up (or sucked up by YouTube 
or other negative interests) simply because the person making it 
couldn't pay for all the bandwidth when they became popular.

It's pretty ironic that the demands of binaries prompted them all to 
drop Usenet support.  In the end, the demands *without* a CDN are much 
higher.  And yet it's still a tough sell to revive Usenet.

Sonic has its own Usenet server, although they don't officially
support it any more. I think they also offer Supernews, although
I haven't tried it.
