With 10.6 on the laptop? My iPad can't go higher than 10.5

Why do I need iTunes 11.1 ?

What do you sync TO if your music, books and pdfs, and iPhoto stuff is all
backed up in iTunes on the computer? I don't use the cloud for anything
except travel e-mail. I don't want to be dependent for something as simple
as reading a book or checking travel info on a wi - fi connection.

the ipad doesn't run 10.5.

your ipad stops at ios 5.1.1 (which might be what you're thinking of).

a new ipad comes with ios 7.

if your laptop can't run anything beyond 10.5, then it would be a
powerpc laptop. that would be rather unlikely.

all intel laptops can run 10.6, which is the minimum that's needed.

for ios 7 support, which is what a new ipad will have.

you can still keep stuff on the device, you just don't need to have a
computer to do it.

iOS7 works with OS 10.6? From comments here I got the impression Mavericks
was required.

I figured there'd be a catch. There was some discussion a while about an
iTunes beyond mine that kept me from wanting it.

Mavericks is not required.

iOS 7 requires iTunes 11.1 or later if you want to manage the device
from the computer, or sync media and other content with the computer.

On a Mac, iTunes 11.1 requires Mac OS X 10.6.8 or later.

iTunes 11 made some significant changes in the user interface but you
can ignore most of them by turning the sidebar back on again via the
View menu. One of the major features that is gone is the Coverflow view.

As long as your device is already running iOS 5 or later, it is possible
to use it in a completely standalone manner without even owning a
computer. (Earlier versions of iOS required iTunes in order to do
management tasks including installing new iOS versions on the device.)

If you use an iOS device without a computer, it is still a good idea to
back it up, which can be done to a free iCloud account (the backup is
stored on Apple's servers).

Getting media onto an iOS device without a computer is usually done from
various online sources, with the obvious example being the iTunes Store.

mavericks is not required.

ios 7 requires itunes 11.1 or later, which will run on 10.6.8 or later,
so there's no issue about being able to run it.

however, you don't have to use itunes if you use the cloud.

ios 7 is worlds better than ios 5.1.1 and a new ipad is *substantially*
faster (~5x) than an original ipad.

it's a huge upgrade.

I'm not sure the speed is a big factor for me, but the itunes nimber brings
up another question: what if my iTunes is two versions old? I can't tell
here on the iPad, but I think it is. this hasn't been a factor to date. Am
I going to find the interim steps?

you can upgrade from whatever version you have to 11.1 directly.

That makes no sense. You iPad can be connected to any Mac and is in no
way limited to 10.5.

You are not understanding what 'sync to the cloud' entails. You need
WiFi to SYNC, but once you've done that, all the files are on your iOS
device.

Don't you need at least 10.7 to use iCloud? I have 10.6.8, and it only
knows about MobileMe, which no longer exists.

for icloud it is, but icloud is not the only cloud option.

an easy way to move stuff to an idevice is via dropbox and it stays on
the device, either within the dropbox app or moved to another app
(e.g., to ibooks for books).

also, with backups in icloud, there's very little need to connect an
idevice to a computer with itunes for a backup.

But if they're in the cloud, how do you do anything at all offline?

You only need to be on the Internet to do a backup. Typically you would
have a WiFi network at home, and the iPad would back itself up to iCloud
automatically once per day, while you had it plugged in to recharge.

they're in the cloud *and* on your phone. it's a copy.

you don't need to be tethered to your computer all the time to use an
iphone or ipad, so why would you need to be on wifi all the time?

it helps, since backups are done as stuff happens rather than when you
get back into an area with wifi, but it's not required. it just happens
later.

no.

usually the various cloud services offer a small amount of space for
free (where 'small' is a few gigabytes) and paid options for more.

and sometimes the small amount is actually rather large. flickr offers
a terabyte of storage, for instance, for free. that's more space than
the hard drive of the mac i'm currently using has.

The feature set is summarised here.

http://www.apple.com/icloud

If your computer is running Mac OS X 10.6.8 or earlier, you can't use
iCloud on your computer unless you upgrade to a later verison of OS X.

If your computer is running Mac OS X 10.7 or later, then it has the
option of using iCloud, but some features require a newer version of OS
X. See this page for the requirements for specific features.
