#19233 — Get image from iPhoto to Mail.app

Fromme@home.spamsucks.ca (Király)
Date2013-11-05 03:01 +0000
SubjectGet image from iPhoto to Mail.app
Message-ID<l59n23$bdp$1@dont-email.me>
Running 10.9 and the latest iPhoto.

The share button no longer sends a photo to Mail.app. It composes and
sends an email directly from iPhoto.

Is there any way to get iPhoto to send it to Mail.app anymore? Having to
manually resize the photo, export it to the desktop, and then attach it
to a mail message is a real pain compared to how it used to be.

As a quick enough workaround, how about just grabbing the photo and
plonking it on the Mail.app compose field and choosing Small, Medium
or Large for size in bottom right corner. Dropping a 1.8 MB file,
choosing the size in the app here downsizes it's physical dimensions
and file size, it goes down to the range of 45k - 366k. Unless your
Mail.app has changed this feature too!

Couldn't see what you meant, then found it on the *top* right corner.
Thanks.

Apple moved it between Mtn Lion and Mavericks.

Idiots. Another reason to skip 10.9.

Moving a button in one window of one application is a reason not to use
an entire version of an OS?

He did say "Another reason". Rather different.

Reasons not to trust an app can be like bad or missing supports to the
successful functioning of a structure. If there are enough missing or
damaged supports, the structure will be untrustworthy. Under the bed I
regularly sleep in, there are 15 milk crates (used for storage), the
removal of any one or two or even three seems not to affect normal
use, but there are combinations of missing crates that make the bed
very much less than good.

So why are you surprised by his statement? Reasons pile up in a
person's head. The particular reason in question, all by its lonesome,
is not necessarily being said to put the person off an OS.

Delete the word "Idiots" and the comment stands.

I skipped 10.7 because of the volume of negative comments on these
news groups and in hindsight I believe that was the right thing to
have done. Reading the groups recently I think 10.9 is another
candidate for skipping. At a minimum I'm waiting to see what's said
about 10.9.1.

There is a preference in iPhoto to control this: "Email photos using"
(under the General category).

At a minimum it lets you pick Mail, Microsoft Outlook (if installed) or
iPhoto. I don't know offhand if it recognises any other e-mail clients.

(The same option existed in iPhoto '11, by the way.)

So there is. I must have set it so long ago that I forgot about it.

OK... and?

"Show Photo Browser" in the mail message header. Its icon looks like a
photo of a landscape.

Drag the picture(s) from iPhoto to the mail window.

Drag the picture(s) from iPhoto to the Mail icon in the dock.

Why would you have to manually resize the photo?

Using mail.app 9.0, I select an image and click on the share button, I
then click on the mail icon in the resulting pallet. I then get a
dialog that lets me choose Actual size, large, medium, or small. I
think click on the Compose Message button, and the image appears in an
outgoing message in mail.app.

What am I missing there?

Nothing; it was I who was missing the preference in iPhoto to use
Mail.app instead of iPhoto for sharing by email. Thanks to all who
responded.

iPhoto->Preferences

There's as pop-up selector right there: Email Photos using [pop-up]

It includes iPhoto itself, Mail.app, and, at least on my machine, Outlook.

I'm a little behind. I saw about 15 responses which didn't include
this, so I responded. Then I saw the rest.

Like the OP, I'd found this new default behavior to be very annoying,
though I'm pretty sure it first happened a couple of releases ago.

What on earth could they be thinking - we *have* a mail program - why
would I want iPhoto to be its own half-assed one in addition? It just
seems like a bizarre change to me.

While I'm here wondering out loud:

Didn't iPhoto used to have built-in local-network sharing of photo libraries?

I guess Apple thinks we're all going to use PhotoStream sharing, which
is just absurd.

The canonical collection of photos is in my copy of iPhoto. Wife
wanted to do some stuff with pix - used to be that she could log on
herself and see my library if I shared it (and if I was logged in and
had iPhoto running). Now I had to move the library to a shared folder,
carefully update and manage file permissions, make damned sure I've
quit iPhoto, and have her hit option when starting it in order to
select my library. Moreover, I need to make sure she doesn't change or
delete anything. She can't just get a read-only view of it.

Am I misremembering the ability to share and view other people's libraries?

I've been doing that since about 2005; wife and I both share and edit
the same iPhoto library. Permissions issues are solved by using ACLs.
