#19035 — Mail drops PW

My main e-mail account starting dropping the Password and reentering it
in Preferences does good only for the session— or rather until I quit
the app. Yes, leaving the app open will avoid frequent re-entering, but
I've been in the habit of closing apps when through with them. (not
necessary today, but a long hangover from OSes 6, 7, 8, 9.

Short of deleting the account an rebuilding it in Mail, is there a fix
to this?

What kind of email account is it? There have been reports of Apple Mail and
Yahoo mail having these kind of problems, the solution back then was to go
to yahoo.com and login, logout, and then login again. It should then as you
if you want to upgrade your account to the new version, which helped some.

You can also remove the passwords from the keychain app, which would
re-save them to it when entering it in Mail next time, that may help.

It was (is) my mac.com e-mail, and after combing through Keychain and
deleting lots of stuff, that seems to have done the trick. Also cleaned
house and deleted carryovers from long gone computers and comcast.net
mail accounts.

Thank you.

No problem. Hope it stays fixed.

Don't be too hopeful, though of course, I hope this has done the trick
for you for good. I think Mail.app is buggy.

Been doing this sort of thing for years in my Mail.app. In my
Mail.app, the password as represented by the bullets, now and then
disappear for no known reason at all, even when prefs are locked.

I am neither hopeful nor despairing over the matter..... this is the
first real glitch in Mail for several years that wasn't cured by
relaunching the app.

I've seen this from time to time with CrapCast and AT&T's mail. It's
usually their authentication server going off-line (separate from
email). I usually ignore it until they fix it or in those two services,
don't use their email system at all. I use Gmail or my web hosting
company's servers instead.

AT&T has gotten better and I haven't had a "failed to connect" in a
while. Didn't do any good to call support. Those people just go to an
internal web site for status and can't fix anything.

Does your problem happen on ALL the accounts or just one in particular?

Does the problem happen with another user on your system or just this
user?

It was a mac.com account, and it's been cured.

Thank you.

I was going to suggest some keychain cleaning - but appears you've done
that...

I get this occasionally with Gmail accounts and less often with my ISP
mail. It doesn't persist as it seems to do in your case - that is
re-entering the PW fixes it and I can quit mail and come back in and all
is well.

As to habits, from my Windows days stretching back to Win 3.1, I don't
close utility apps like mail. I start them and they remain running
until the machine needs a shutdown or reboot [or occasionally the app
might need a restart]. In the case of this iMac (or at least the prior
one) that could be stretches of up to 2 months before I was forced by
some Apple DL to restart the computer - so mail and others would be
running for that period as well.
