Ugg. Google Groups sucks so bad I'll just take your word for it that
you've longstanding issues.

How is MacSOUP not working under 10.9? If you mean you don't like it's
feature set and design, fine. But it works well in 10.9 - I've watched
it being used with nary a hiccup, and have had other reliable positive
feedback from users of 10.9 and MacSOUP (I'm still on 10.6.8, at least
till I get a new Mac... if I stick with Apple).

Thoth 1.9 seems to work under Mavericks. It launched and started
downloading the group list from news.individual.net and messages for
one newsgroup. That is all the time I had for testing this morning
after downloading Mavericks over night.

Available here:

I got the trial also, works quite well though the setup is the same old
convoluted crap it has always been.

Overall very MT-Newswatcher like as you would expect.

Don't know if I'll end up buying it as I have bought Unison which is
very nice also and more than good enough for text usenet, which is all
I do.

Looks like I'll be moving to tin/slrn or something similar soon...

Right, thanks. Seems lots of people will go to the command line. That's
good, that means we have each other to work out the kinks in the
transition :)

Indeed. I've been putting it off for years, myself.

I just downloaded it and got an 'internal error' report when trying to
get the list of groups. Couldn't get past that. I don't know if
someone that has it already set up won't be able to use it or not.

While I've used command line usenet readers long ago, I have no
intention of going back to them.

I've got a demo of Unison going now and I like what I see so far.

I went from gnus/emacs to Unison.

Unison suffers from a few really annoying flaws - filtering sucks,
there's no archive of one's posts, it does not allow you to keep your
config files in Dropbox (I tried a variety of ways, contacted the
authors, got nowhere), and worst of all, crashes every time I invoke
"Ignore Sender…" to add someone to my filters. No way to mark a
message as a "favorite" or whatever to keep it around - it's either
read or not-read. Saving local copies of messages can be done, but the
saved copies are plain text files, not integrated into the UI.

Even with all that crap, I still use it. I like the UI a whole lot.

For my needs, at this point, it generally sucks least.

I may go back to gnus, though. I'd been running it via ssh to a remote
machine completely maintained by someone else and it may be worth
setting up my own local copy on OS X and just point it at the remote
nntp, smtp, etc. I've been a little to lazy to mess around with it in
quite some time.

FWIW, gnus also works quite nicely as an IMAP client. It's pretty slick.

But you have to love being in emacs. I don't anymore, but I used to
pretty much spend my whole day in emacs.

I thought about just using my local Win8.1 laptop via remote desktop
and using Windows Live Mail since it is OK, but in the end I really use
the MacBook Pro a whole lot more than anything else and it would be
awkward to RDP into my Win8.1 box from away from home! :)

And I agree, for the bugs that Unison has that don't interfere with the
way I use a usenet client, it is more than good enough. And I am
really liking the interface.

I've been using tin on OS X since about 10.3, and on other platforms (might have been nn actually) since the early 1990s. Its filtering abilities are rather weak but I like everything else about it.
