Since I live in the USA, to use the BBC iPlayer I have to poach by
using a VPN and spoof a UK location. That works nicely and I get
programing not available on BBC America, but best of all, NO
COMMERCIALS.

I can do that with Kodi, through a VPN, but the time difference makes it
kind of not-worth-the-effort. I can download a BBC program that's been
broadcast at 9pm in England and watch it at 9pm-ish eastern. We did that
with Broadchurch (and Life on Mars, years ago).

The AppleTV box, in UKLand, does have sports channels and Netflix and
services that provide really, really old and crappy movies, not "B"
movies, more like whatever comes ten steps after "Z" movies.
You need to pay for Netflick or at least get a "free month's trial"
before you discover that it has few movies and even fewer Tv programs
after 2013. It's at least a season behind all of the USALien networks.
That *could* be a UKlander regional thing.
AppleTv is a nice toy but it's never going to be a serious supplier
of TV or film services.
Jolly no doubt disagrees vehemently. The religious often do.

It's a little black box you connect to your television that allows you
to stream content from the internet, computers, and iOS devices to your
television on demand.

It's also an Apple "appliance" that works pretty much exclusively with
iTunes, which is why it's cheap. Alternatives that aren't tied to Apple
products can be more expensive.

There's always the Raspberry Pi! A buddy of mine runs his HTPC on one
and I was like "you'll never get 1080p ..." and he does.

What extra might it give me that the telly is not already giving me?
It's already connected to the Internet. I already get BBC iPlayer on
the TV. I've seen NetFlix is on there but have no interest in
subscription services.

It can get you your iTunes library. But not, I'm told, anything else on
your drives.

It's true -- a lot of what these devices do is built in to modern
televisions.

I don't have an iTunes library. I have a load of DVDs and a DVD player
connected to the telly. And a load of CDs that I play on a CD player.

 AppleTv won't touch those.
Not unless you first save them into the iTunes library as something
iTunes is allowed to read.
Which pretty much excludes most of what I have "backed-up" to my NAS.

such as the industry standard mp3 or aac for audio and h.264 or mp4 for
video.

then you're using a non-standard format.

There is no need for Apple TV to touch those; he has the DVD and CD
players.

As an aside, because the DVD player plays CDs, why bother with a
separate CD player?

Because the DVD player will send the signal to the telly, which then
sends it to the stereo via the headphone output (the telly doesn't have
a line out. Why? Search me). The CD player sends a line-level signal
straight to the stereo, thus avoiding a number of conversion steps.

OK. My DVD (well BluRay, actually) player sends the signal, via HDMI,
to the 7.1 receiver, which sends video signals to the telly (via HDMI)
and audio signals to the speakers. (It actually sends audio to the
telly too, but I have the telly's audio muted.)

Yes, there those kinds of things, too.

Legacy. I had one, bought the other, still have the first. I also
have a Blu-Ray player that I bought for my retirement gift to me. That
has a hard-drive, records stuff and also networks. Bloody expensive
but a magic toy.
Oh, and it records to BD as well.
Why would I throw away my CD player just because I also have a better
one?

I didn't throw mine away; someone else has it now, and is making good
use of it.

Well that isn't true. Using iTunes I can access *anything* on the NAS
drives, so long as it's in a format AppleTV and iTunes are allowed to
read.
 There aren't many of those.

Yep. Even Netflix and sports TV.

Everything you want to know about the AppleTV is available on the
internet. Go find out if you are really interested. I'm not your
secretary.
