Good that you could provide the many links to the programs which work just
fine.
After all, X is not even provided out of the box anymore on OSX, and even if
it were it would be basically useless since next to none current unix
programs work with just X alone

Do you really think that you can fool anyone with an IQ above room

Ironic, coming from someone who believes 90% of all unix software does
not run on OS X, which is unix. : )

Yes. A unix where apple paid for having the rights to put a "unix" tag to
it. The only unix which has no X running as GUI, and on top of X one of the
several display managers.

In short: It is difficult to port unix gui software to OSX. Add to that the
fact that OSX is only case-preserving and for that reason has even the CLI
tools modified you have a lot of stuff why OSX is a unix by name, not by its
workings. I have to work with that shitty OS because people want the
programs for OSX too. But that does not mean that I have to like that awful
crap

You could try using declarative sentences that we (tinw) can all

Another good thing about OS X is that we don't as a rule have to deal
with the case-sensitive file system shit. Although you can format your
disk to be case sensitive if you wish.

Can you make OSX and all of its programs case-sensitive, too? Not
that I want to, I'm just being nosey.
If you can, is it easy or one-of-*those*-things?

Perhaps he's Win-trained and can't see how useful and easy OSX is in
certain circumstances. All he sees is how much of a pig's bastard it
is when it chooses to be difficult.
That's not a dig at OSX, *ALL* OSes are pig's bastards when they
baulk at what we want to do and OSX does do a lot of stuff differently
from *Nixxy and Win OSes.
Maybe Peter just doesn't feel comfortable with it, yet?

The file system HFS, yes. But the system will exhibit strange behaviour
sometimes

> Not that I want to, I'm just being nosey.

The CLI apps can't handle case-sensitivity (any more).
With each new release of OSX there were more and more CLI tools "overhauled"
to not be case-sensitive. And each time another bunch of scripts from the
unix world would not run anymore unchanged

> If you can, is it easy or one-of-*those*-things?
> Thanks.

Better don't. You get all kinds of strange errors. And it isn't even easy
for the filesystem, as you have to reformat the disk. You can't just simply
declare a volume as "case-sensitive" in Disk-Tools

OSX isn't written that well that it would handle such a situation gracefully

 I appreciate it.

Haven't a clue, laddie, nor do I give a monkey's. I can't envisage any
circs under which I'd *want* a case sensitive OS.

Same here. Much ado about essentially nothing.

 True enough.

 *I* can. If I'm using a case-sensitive non-English language in
something I'm writing. But then I currently just fiddle until it
works. There may be other reasons but I haven't found any.
 *Yet*!
And *I*, for your information, young man, haven't been a "laddie"

In a text document? We are talking about file systems.

Which is needed to store the non-English names of the text documents
if written in a case-sensitive, non-English tongue.
A bit obscure, yes, but it's about the only case I could come up with
at short notice where I *might* need a case-sensitive FS. Even then
it's doubtful.

Laughable is more like it. You pulled that out of your head, but I
seriously doubt you have ever encountered a situation where you needed
to spell the name of two files in the same directory the same except for
capitalization.

Don't be silly. Why would I need a case-sensitive file system to store
a file written in a case-sensitive, non-English tongue?

What is being referred to is the names of the files, which on a
sensible computer system are not case sensitive. Nothing to do with the
content of the file.
