Not for me. I don't want it. But OS/X won't let me uninstall it - at
least not permanently. Ergo, Apple think this is their computer, not
mine.

nonsense. it's not that hard to remove itunes for those who really want
it gone, but again, there's absolutely no need to do that since apps
that are not used do nothing but take up a tiny amount disk space. it's
not worth worrying about.

 Huge, type:
"I want to fucking *ANNIHILATE* fucking iTunes forever and ever and
ever without its bloody rotting, stinking corpse *EVER* showing up at
or even within miles of my door ever again as I am sick and tired of
the shitty software and its fucking zombie tactics"
into your favourite online search engine and you will have sight of
*loads* of sites cited that have sited on their sites instructions for
removing iTunes.
At least one of the comp.mac.* newsgroups had a long thread about it
sometime fairly recently.

Uhh, you *may* wish to shorten your search key and perhaps tone down
the language a little, but that's up to your personal taste, of
course.

what does that have to do with anything?

the topic is being able to *install* whatever you want, not
uninstalling an app.

if you don't want to use itunes, don't use it. there's no need to
uninstall it, especially since it doesn't take up much space. it's a
tiny fraction of a penny in storage costs.

The only possible issue with iTunes is that AppleTV seems to like
your network having a copy somewhere and AppleTV's remote actives
iTunes when you're trying to watch Netflix. This can cause great
hilarity on your Macbook.
It won't do any damage, usually, but it sometimes does try to run
things on the Mac.
That's easily fixed by telling the Mac to ignore the remote, or by
not having the Mac in line with it or by any of a dozen other methods
and it's not a great issue anyway but it *is* there.
And maybe it irks some sensitive souls.
 *I* think it's funny.

The safest way of avoiding this "problem" is, obviously, not having
an AppleTV but I saw one for not much pounds so I bought it. It's one
more toy to amuse me.

No, AppleTV functions just fine without a copy of iTunes on the network.

Pretty silly that anyone would be irked by something they have full
control over. If you don't want your computer to respond to commands
from Apple remotes, tell it not to respond. Simple.

That's a very silly "solution". A quick toggle of System Preferences >
Security & Privacy > General > Advanced > Disable remote control
infrared receiver does the trick nicely and allows you to continue
enjoying your AppleTV. ; )

 Mine doesn't.
Or at least I don't *think* it will. It only sees the NAS drive if I
activate iTunes on the Macbook.
It only sees the *Macbook* if I activate iTunes.
Okay, so maybe I'm not set up properly but what I have is what I
have. Maybe I'll fiddle when I get bored. Maybe someone wise and kind
will suggest a simple toggle I can click?

 Yes, I mentioned that.
Strangely, I also mentioned that it is the *only* problem I've found
with iTunes and that it is *minor* and *trivial*. I don't really
understand why so many others dislike leaving iTunes on their box and
just not running it, but maybe simple things like this do annoy some
sensitive souls.
 People can be weird.

Of course it does. Apple doesn't force anyone to install iTunes on a
computer. If you have no need for iTunes, don't use it. Your AppleTV
works just fine without it.

> Or at least I don't *think* it will. It only sees the NAS drive if I

Seriously? I think it would be pretty silly to expect the AppleTV to
magically see all hard drives connected to your computers with no
software in place to make the content available to the AppleTV. You can
use iTunes to stream content from a computer to your AppleTV. This
doesn't translate into AppleTV "liking" you to have iTunes - a better
way to word it is *you* like to have iTunes installed somewhere so you
can stream content from a computer to your AppleTV.

> It only sees the *Macbook* if I activate iTunes.

Yep, so?

You are doing it the right way. I'm not sure how you see this as a
problem.

I don't see how it's any more "safe" than the better solution. : )

I've never used Apple TV, but my HTPC (running Kodi) sees all the drives
on all my computers that have either Samba or Avahi (Zeroconf/Bonjour)
enabled. Does Apple TV not support Bonjour or Samba?

Nope. And I'm glad. A simple network file browser can't deliver nearly
as good a user experience as a multimedia browser that respects ID3 tags
so you can easily sort by genre and so on. And I'd hate to have to dig
down through folder after folder just to see my content.

That's how my ancient WD Live worked, but it's not how Kodi works at
all. I make sure my audio material is properly "tagged" and Kodi
respects those tags (I can also turn that feature off). Kodi goes out
and finds ("scrapes" is the jargon) all the metadata for an album and/or
artist, including track-lists and descriptions and album art. All I
have to do is point Kodi at the relevant volume, and say "this is music"
(or, "this is tv shows" or "this is movies"). It gives me a good choice
of "scapers" too, in case one of them has never heard of Exile on Main
Street ...

There's a Kodi for OS X; you should try it out. It's free. When I was
recuperating from a minor operation, I dragged the MBP into the bedroom
and turned on Kodi and watched movies and swallowed percs for a week.

Why should I try it out? My current setup with an AppleTV and a Mac mini
attached to an NAS holding all of my media allows me to browse all of my
media intelligently rather than using a file system, and doesn't require
any third-party apps like Kodi.

AppleTV does not support just about *anything*. It won't even play
AVI files, of which I have lots.
Basically, it is a very restrictive piece of kit, but it was cheap
and it's a new toy so I'm not whining.
But JR is being disingenuous. It *must* have iTunes running somewhere
of only the AppleTV box itself shows. *Wiht* iTunes it can become a
very poor, very restrictive networked device.
JR *knows* this but he's reluctant, for some strange reason to admit
that any Apple product has *any* flaw. Even when they are obvious,
glaring and bloody annoying.
 Which some are.

Bull. It supports plenty.

> It won't even play AVI files, of which I have lots.

It plays H.264, MPEG-4, and motion JPG formats just fine. If you want it
to play other less common formats, you can jail break it.

> Basically, it is a very restrictive piece of kit, but it was cheap

I don't find it restrictive at all. Must be you.

> But JR is being disingenuous. It *must* have iTunes running somewhere
> of only the AppleTV box itself shows.

That sentence doesn't even make sense. And it is you who are being
disingenuous. Again, iTunes is *not* required. AppleTV works just fine
without iTunes. That said, if you want to stream content from a
comupter, iTunes is the way to do it. But certainly not all of AppleTV
is based on streaming content from computers. There are *many* more
features that than in AppleTV.

> *Wiht* iTunes it can become a very poor, very restrictive networked device.

More bullshit. It works fine. Your nebulous "poor" and "restrictive"
descriptions don't match my experience with my AppleTVs.

> JR *knows* this but he's reluctant, for some strange reason to admit
> that any Apple product has *any* flaw.

More bullshit. You have yet to present a flaw - all you have done above
is give a nebulous "poor, restrictive networked device" description
without mentioning a specific flaw.

Oh come on. Or you can buy something that is less restrictive.

Absolutely. Did I say that was not an option?

What *is* an Apple TV? I keep seeing it referred to, but have never
seen a simple explanation of what it does.

That tells me next to nothing, except it appears to refer to stuff I
don't want on devices I don't have.

Think I'll stick with FreeView, FreeSat, and BBC iPlayer.

The Apple TV is used to display content on a television. If you don't
want that, then you don't need it, nor a Roku, etc.
