:-) Yes, I recall it seeming to be slow. We were considering
installing Ethernet at SLAC at the time, and also considering what to
do with it. At the time we had ascii terminals that could connect o
e.g. VAXes or IBM Series/1 doing 3270 emulation, via a Micom Switch.
IIRC we were trying to decide whether to do more of the same or try
something radical. The Ethernet went in but the we stuck with the
Micom, in the end, for another decade.

nonsense. a mac 128k was a huge improvement over the star. i used both.

everything about a star was slow, not just rebooting it.

i used a xerox star and the only thing similar was that both were a gui.

the differences were substantial, both in usability and speed.

Windows 3.x was released about 1993, about 9 years after the Mac.

Having done a lot of support for Windows 3 I would challenge the
assertion that it was usable.

Macs, on the other hand, were usable from day one.

It's worth watching. I don't want to get into details, because it might
involve "spoilers" but it's a pretty good snapshot of computer life in
1983. Set and costume design are superior to The Americans, which is set
in the same year.

Looks like it's available for streaming on Netflix. Added to my watch

Wasn't that a processor instruction on certain computers?

The emulation in OS/2 was pretty good.

I said "useable". Win95 was just about useable, if buggy. Windows 3.x

You wish. Xerox and Apple both reaped benefits from their agreement.
Neither is unhappy about that.

I was only referring to the comment expressed that Apple were first with a
GUI. Nothing else.

I wouldn't worry about what JR says; it's *all* wrong.

The context was someone claiming Apple copied Windows UI - not Apple
being first ever in the world. Stop being silly.
