I have plenty of Windows machines (each of the kids has one), and the
wife is on a Macintosh while I'm on a dual boot Linux/Windows machine.

I almost never boot to Windows, and only do so when I must use Microsoft
Office (which, is the standard, like it or not - and - no - all the other
office suites are NOT fully compatible when transferring docs back and
forth to Windows users).

In my experience, they all do the same thing.

All have a desktop, menu systems, the same web browsers, the same major
email clients, similar nntp clients, similar editors (with the key
exception listed above), etc.

They're all easy to use and hard to use.

EASY:
Windows - it set the standard for the graphical user interface
Macintosh - it tried to be different (and screwed up a lot, but got a lot
right at the same time)
Linux - it simply copied those above

HARD:
Windows - it still crashes more than it should
Macintosh - it's like being at the DMV - the rules only make sense to Mac
users - they're incomprehensible to everyone else
Linux - it's still a geek's favorite operating system because of power
and flexibility - but it's still not yet your Mom's operating system

Wrong. The Macintosh came first with a GUI (and mouse). MS Windows was
an imitation.

That may well be true.

I'd have more fun with Linux if I could get it to boot the command
line and let me play with all those pipes and things.

And the software I use every day won't run on it, so it's for playing
with when I have time on my hands.

There's lots of Linux distributions do that. Ubuntu is an African word
meaning "Arch is too difficult for my village."

Linux is an adulation of a person word that means "Windows is too
difficult for me and I think using Linux makes me cool".

MS Office is often not compatible with itself, in fact.

The Mac was released in 1984. A useable version of Windows didn't
appear until Win95 which was what, 1997?

Already by 1987 you could buy a Mac, plug several displays into it, and
have an extended desktop across the several displays. A feature that
Windows lacked until XP or so.

That would be their own silly arse fault for not recognising what they
had. Jobs paid for the privilege of rooting around at PARC, they didn't
just go there and lo and behold a similar system is then sold a few
months later by Apple. Apple also improved on what Xerox had before the
Mac was released.

1995, thus it's name.

and it didn't work that well in xp either.

meanwhile, macs could use 6 displays or even more without issue. most
people had 2 or 3 though.

Too true.

Sadly, also true. Xerox senior management weren't interested in anything
that didn't spit sheets of paper.

Actually, that's exactly what happened. All the licensing stuff was worked
out after the event (and after several lawsuits between MS, Apple & Xerox)

Speaking as likely the only person on this 'froup who has actually *used*
a Xerox Star (and is typing this on a MacBook), I think I can reasonably
say that this is nonsense.

Nope. The systems were not similar. Xerox hadn't designed many of the
user interface elements that are needed for a desktop computing
experience. Not a single line of code was taken from Xerox - Apple
designed all of the missing pieces and wrote Mac OS from scratch.

I've used one.

Nope, he's right. Apple *did* improve on what they saw at Xerox, which
was completely missing many of the interface elements needed to function
as a desktop operating system, because Xerox was only interested in
documents for printing.

Just as one famous example, overlapping windows was a Macintosh
innovation.

I can't say that I've used one, but was present at PARC as part of a
SLAC team in 1982 (or possibly 83, can't remember now) and saw a demo
of a Star system.

You might find one in operation at your local computer museum.

I've written applications for them and provided technical support for
a Xerox Tech Pubs department who used them to write all their documentation.

TBH, there's very little functionally that's improved since. What has
improved beyond recognition is the performance. It took ~20 minutes to
reboot a Star.
