Just open a terminal window. I forget what it's called under Linux
(it's Terminal under OS X), I rarely run it.

<restarts Linux VM> Ah, it seems to be called Terminal there, also.

And the Mac was an imitation of systems developed at Xerox PARC.

You haven't actually seen what Xerox had then. Mac OS is much more than
just that.

no kidding.

the mac is a huge improvement over the xerox star (which i used long
ago) in both usability and speed (and that's compared with a mac 128k).

To put things in perspective, the whole thing is that at that time
computers were command line driven including internet. In order to use any
system you had to learn a bunch of commands.
Xerox experimented with and demonstrated an interface that used a graphic
terminal and a pointing device. This was revolutionary and opened the path
of universal accessibility to virtually all, including grandma.
Of course there would be changes and improvements by others, a current
Ford Focus (a rather nice car), doesn't look much like the Model A, but
the idea is the same.
The same can be said for the guy that came up with the browser, with it
everybody can use the internet.
As for Linux, good, but not for everyone and won't be until people like
Dell etc. start making it for general use. But then it might cost, and
paying for things isn't something Linux people like to do, which is why
your favourite desktop programs and other stuff don't make it to that
platform. But gimp, scribus and libre office are quite usable. Put it this
way, if Macs and Windows didn't exist, we would all use Linux but why
bother when we have one of the former.

Look at you, getting your little panties twisted because someone showed

OS is much more than what Xerox had.

No. Those of us where were around back in the 1980s know Mac OS GUI
existed long before Windows did, and Microsoft essentially copied the
Mac interface (a sloppy contract with Apple allowed them to directly
model their UI on the Mac UI) and later moved things around to make it
look just different enough to get away with it (while screwing up the
UX), which is why the Windows task bar, the equivalent of the Mac menu
bar, is on the bottom rather than the top, and why desktop icons are on
the left side of the screen rather than the right side, for instance.

This actually works both ways, some people have no problem with the Mac,
but Windows baffles them completely.

There should be room for all 3 operating system without people acting
like a bunch of first graders about which one is the best. IMO, all 3
meet different needs, and appeal to a different set of users.

It's when you get into an argument over which on is best, which one is
largest, etc., that all reason seems to fly out the window. <------ No
pun intended. LOL

Don't go introducing common sense to this. People's heads will explode.

:o)

The last crash of the WinOS I had was in Win95. WinME, WinXP and Win7
have crashed programs, and they have struggled to cope when I have had
umpty zillion things running at once but I haven't had a total crash
(apart from maybe one city-wide power cut) since about 1997.
Windows being flakier than OSX or Linux is a myth.

Apple do things differently from MS just because they can and just to
*BE* different. Little things like where the scroll arrows on a window
are by default and naming conventions, the "Enterprise" and
"Knotty-rope" keys and "Finder" instead of "Explorer".
It doesn't matter who got there first, the two of them could have got
together in a room and *standardised* some of that stuff.
Does anyone see that ever happening?

I don't see why. All an OS is is a way of running stuff. They are
pretty much all the same. Sure, names and locations of clickies differ
greatly and some aren't graphical but they all pretty much allow a
human to tell the hardware to change state.
 Read data, process, output, next.
Once you've used any OS, all of the others should be easy to pick up.
At least enough to be able to browse, email and run videos of cats
dancing in boxes.

As do mainframe OSes, supercomputer OSes, embedded OSes in Apollo
command modules and sugary drinks vending machines and millions of
others. *Nixxy, Mac and Win OSes may get all the attention in these
newsgroups but there are many, many others and some are *vital* to our
lives.
An OS is "best" when it does the job.
It is "sub-optimal" when it does not.
And you are right, there is adequate room for all.

A user thought he was funny so he submitted a pun into the Annual Pun
Contest. He was not the champion. Disapponted but not discouraged he
tried again the next year. He still did not make the highest ranks. So
he tried again the year after that, again without much success.
He submitted his puns into the contest for a solid decade, never
giving up.
None of his efforts won anything.
Indeed, no pun in ten did.

Sorry, but that's just not true. I've supported and written software for
Windows, Linux, Unix, and Mac clients in large corporate / enterprise
environments, and Windows has a reputation for being problematic - much
more so than *nix alternatives, including OS X.
