Apple didn't say I had to install and run Photoshop, or Lightroom (or
any of the add-on plugins), but they live and work on my Mac. I have
had little trouble installing and running software compatible with my
edition of OSX, and all I have installed meet my non-geek needs.

neither of those run on linux.

in other words, apple allows *more* software than linux does.

Remember, the monolithic itunes insaller also secretly adds Bonjour by
default, and a few other things like Quicktime, and mobile device
support, and others.

bonjour and quicktime are extremely useful, as is mobile device support
which just about everyone has.

why would anyone *not* want them??

Why _would_ you want Bonjour, unless you have Apple TV or are setting
up a media network?

That's a good reason. Kodi understands Bonjour (we call it Avahi in my
village). Sometimes called Zeroconf.

What gets installed by what is irrelevant. Like I said, Apple decides
what gets installed on "your" machine, not you.

you obviously have no idea what it even does. it's not exclusive to
apple tv or media players or even apple itself. bonjour is the name
apple uses for zeroconf.

lots of network devices use it, such as printers, making setup for the
most part, automatic.

not having it installed only makes things harder for the user.

Bonjour is part of the Tunes for Windows install. I have no idea
whether it's needed on Macs (where, from context, I gather iTunes is
preinstalled), but I and countless other users on Windows have no
need for Bonjour.

You do remember this is a Windows newsgroup, right?

(And consider making fewer one-word replies. Even when I agree with
you and disagree with the person you're replying to, the repetition
gets old fast.)

It's never presented me with any problems on my Windows installs.

I've found it handy for locating printers on the network and of course
for locating Apple devices on the network. I think it's safe to assume
if you are installing iTunes on your PC you might just have an Apple
device on your network. ; )

It's a Mac application newsgroup too. : ) You can always trim the
newsgroups header in your replies, if you like.

No, it's comp.sys.mac.apps. I see there is another ng on the Newsgroups
line, but I neither know nor care anything about it.

Good point -- crossposts to different OS groups are relatively rare,
and I got out of the habit of checking for them.

that's because itunes uses it, as do a lot of other things, including
printers, dvrs and other network devices and even other (non-apple)
software.

be glad it's installed, because otherwise you'd have to hunt it down
and manually install it to gain its benefits.

only if they want to make their lives more difficult.

what you also don't understand is that bonjour is apple's name for
zeroconf and entirely separate from itunes. itunes uses it, which is
why it's installed it if it's not already there.

> You do remember this is a Windows newsgroup, right?

it's crossposted to both windows and mac newsgroups, not that it
matters since and much of the discussion is about linux, not mac or
windows.

why bother writing several paragraphs when one word will suffice.
