nonsense.

it might be difficult for you, but the rest of the world doesn't have a
problem with porting to os x. in fact, most unix apps already
autodetect os x and build without any extra effort.

any software that relies on specifics about the file system is by
definition buggy and needs to be fixed.

OS X is Unix, whether you like it or not. : )

Nobody cares about your silly Linux GUI layers. OS X has a much better
user experience than Linux has yet to provide.

> In short: It is difficult to port unix gui software to OSX.

Not if you know what you are doing and use appropriate tools and libraries.

Big deal. And if you're writing software that makes assumptions about
the type of file system it runs on, you're writing shitty software.

Works great here. Must be you. : )

I'm betting the real "crap" is the software you write.

There's an easy way to resolve this discussion.
You provide TinyPics with screen shots of you downloading and
running, without any modifications, standard *Nixxy packages that live
on standard &*Nixxy sites and are used in standard *Nix (assuming such
a rare animal exists) and Peter can do the same with his *Nixxy
packages that crash.
That is *SCIENCE*, guys, doing experiments with soap and screwdrivers
in the wall sockets and extremely high energy exothermic compounds and
stuff and it can be *fun*.
Why claim when you can *show*?

anyone who supposedly knows how to install unix apps should have no
problem installing x11 on a mac.

the reason it's no longer included is because almost nobody used it. x
is awful, and that's being polite.

that strategy is clearly not working for you.

I'm not surprised you want to move the goal posts. First it was "90% of
unix programs" and now you want to change it to "most unix GUI
programs". If you think 90% of all unix programs are GUI programs, you
have a *lot* to learn about *nix software. You're just as wrong now as
you were then.

nonsense.

just about every unix app will install with little to no modifications
needed and run exactly the same as on any other unix system.

anyone who can't figure out how shouldn't be running linux in the first
place.

there is the occasional app that relies on something specific to linux,
which means it would not install on a generic bsd box either. those are
*very* rare and wouldn't make sense on a non-linux system anyway.

On my Mac G4 (MacOSX 10.2.8), I used "Fink" for that.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_software_package_management_systems

"Fink - A port of dpkg, it is one of the earliest
            package managers for OS X"

Fink ports allows importation of tools you might like.
I had everything you can imagine on that machine. Truly
the universal donor. Too bad by today's standards, the
CPU is so slow.

Fink
Darwin related stuff to play with
CodeWarrier
Virtual PC (with Win2K loaded)
Some kind of X display, for remote Unix box operation
MachTen
Classic (ability to run MacOS 9.1 or earlier applications)
(Box even runs a recent Ubuntu PowerPC boot disc...)

The price of that machine was high, but I never felt
restricted in what I could do with it. If I wanted
Firefox, there was a .dmg for that. So you weren't
stuck with the less-than-adequate Safari.

Some of the items were off the mark. I never use
the Mouse and Keyboard provided in the box, as I
likely own something better. For example, the very
first thing you want, is a "three button" mouse. As
the Mac idea of one button is "just so wrong" :-)

But no complaints about the richness of the stuff
I could run on it. I could do everything I can do
on this PC. And on this PC, I use PearPC and
SheepShaver. The PearPC in the back of that
picture, has verbatim copies of the Mac G4 hard
drives. I hacked PearPC so it would accept drives
over 33GB in size (by actually editing the PearPC
executable with a hex editor).

http://i57.tinypic.com/14xoxog.jpg

(And that's not Knoppix running there. The background
image in WinXP, is copied from Knoppix.)

If you're not having fun with your computer,
"you're not holding it right" :-)

Universal *recipient*, shirley? The donors were the upstream,
superior systems from which you downloaded stuff.

I think I remember installing that, and maybe X11 way back around
2007. Would that have been so?
I know I had to fight to get a version of NTFS-3G working under OSX
then so I could use NTFS drives. That was a pain.

Oh. FF, yes. That "just works". The guys porting FF around have done
very good jobs.
And I've installed Crossover to run WinXP games for the wife, and a
whole raft of video and music and book handling stuff; but almost all
of those were native OSX installs.

Strangely, I have managed to run with the keyboard and touchpad on my
Macbook since 2007, even running WinXP and Win7 games and video stuff.
I've never needed a mousey.
I did get a finger-ring mouse for the wife but she had hand
co-ordination issues so we rarely used it. The mouse and the
"Enterprise" and "Knotty-rope" keys do the job of emulating Windosed
right-clicks and things.

If you're not having fun, sell it and take up a rewarding hobby
instead.
They can be hard work, but even that should be a fun learning

OS X is Unix. So all properly designed/compiled Unix compliant programs
will run on OS X.

Denying it only makes you look more and more foolish to those of us who
know better.

You seem to forget that I own a apple machine myself. Not by choice, though.
If there werent the need to compile/test/run my programs on apple machines
too (because clients asked for that), I would never have bought that crap.
It is not nearly as capable as a typical linux machine. Even that garbage
"windows" is usually better than OSX

I know what can be easily done on OSX and what is more difficult to achieve.

Irrelevant to what is being discussed.

That explains why you are ignorant about OS X.

You rarely use it, so you are clearly an expert about it. Got it.

> It is not nearly as capable as a typical linux machine.

Nonsense. It's more capable in a lot of ways.

> Even that garbage "windows" is usually better than OSX

Laughable.

Clearly, not.

 Windows (TM) programs?

 Sorry.
 But not very.
                   J.

.

.

.

Addendum: yes, I know about and use Crossover, WINE, Boot Camp,
Parallels and some of the other emulators and VM-wares but that is
*NOT* installing Win-proggies under OSX. It is installing OSX programs
that will *then* run Win-proggies. Totally different animal. What we
can't do with OSX is load up Messy Word 97 from a Windows install disk
and expect it to run.
Given the universe of malware that comes with Windows, this may
indeed be a very good thing.
And I do know that Win-stuff won't install under *Nixxy-OSes either.
Not natively. Not usually. But that wasn't the question asked.
This explanation is intended to forestall the otherwise inevitable
millions of " ... but you *CAN* ..." idiotic responses from those with
a sense of humour bypass. It's a lot of work for one stupid joke,
isn't it? But hopefully it will save oodles of otherwise wasted
bandwidth.
                             J.

Hyperbole. I can run more software on Macs than on Linux/Window PCs.

It's been a long time since I found anything useful for Linux that
didn't compile on OS X.

Footnote on the High Energy Magic building: It was here that the thaum,
hitherto believed to be the smallest possible particle of magic, was
successfully demonstrated to be made up of resons (lit: 'Thing-ies) or
reality fragments. Currently research indicates that each reson is
itself made up of a combination of at least five 'flavours', known as
'up', 'down', 'sideways', 'sex appeal' and 'peppermint'.
