Almost all usb cables have usb connectors (of some sort or other) on both ends because otherwise they would be called something slightly different. Ditto firewire. -- dorayme

s/Fireware/FireWire
Radio Shack was an unlikely choice, for this sort of thingamajig.
> OWC has all the cables you could possibly think of.

Yes, of course Erilar could boot the laptop running Snow Leopard into
target mode, and do the migration from it, with the correct FW-800 to
whatever connectors are available on the unnamed device running
Yosemite, for migration. I still see it as a bad move; a disaster in
slow motion. While this might be accomplished by better than 99.9% of
Mac users, this simple solution is not likely to be understood or
executed successfully by this particular luser.
Based on many of the things Erilar's written in these threads, I
believe that the new laptop is FUBAR, and requires a clean
installation of the OS, before any migration is attempted.
None of this appear to be among things this user should even consider,
let alone undertake. This user requires far more assistance than
hand-holding can provide.
A visit to the Genius Bar, with the old laptop, new laptop and iPad,
may be Erilar's only chance for getting from A, to B, to C, at this
point. We are not dealing with anyone approaching being facile with
even the most basic of technical techniques.

I buy cables and stuff from China via Ebay. Takes a bit longer to
arrive, but it's cheap and it's made in the same factory.

Not always, no. Many are counterfeit and are not made well.

Okie-dokie. Everything I've bought from China works just fine. CO
detectors, USB sticks, 100' ethernet cables, a wireless keyboard (cute
little thing), hell, a new gearshift knob for my Vibe (might be a
"counterfeit" though, I dunno).
How can a cable be "counterfeit?"

"Non-compliant" is nowhere near the same thing as "non-working". Non-compliance can be due to something as simple as the maker not being willing to pay the licensing fees for the "official" logo. My experience is that, if you're willing to put up with a little bit of annoyance once in a while, you can save a whole lot of money by buying "cheap" cables. Isaac

No. It would still be correctly called counterfeit by those (mainly moralistic folks) who would point to legal issues. Then you have been lucky. Good for you. Counterfeit accessories have
been known to damage devices, cause syncing or charging issues, cause
fires, and so on. Personally, I'm not willing to take that risk.

None of those are Lightning, Firewire, or USB cables, which is what we
are discussing here.
> How can a cable be "counterfeit?"
Typically they use cheaper and inferior building materials, which
results in poor quality and so on, while claiming to be the real thing:
