#28888 — newsreaders again

Subjectnewsreaders again

MacSoup only reaches 10.9, apparently. Unison and Thinderbird both insist
news.eternal-september.org doesn't exist, or at least can't find it. That's
what I'm using on the iPad and the old SnowLeopard laptop and have been for
the odd few years now.
Suggestions, please!

What is the verbatim error message?

I'll fond out next time I try. My arthritic shoulder is screaming at me
after two long sessions on hold today, and my patience has been fried for
the moment. (One with Apple, and and even longer one with my health
insurance company)

We can't fix all your problems, but I'd recommend a phone with a
speakerphone option, and aversion to starting a cserv call without an
engaging book and a fully loaded battery in the phone.

I was playing solitaire as I waited, but a normal landline phone does
require a hand, true. My stupid phone does have that option, but can't be
used in the house, which is mostly underground. (Said phone lives in the
car for emergency away from home) long waits on the phone are rather rare
in my life, but today was truly bad.

I'd have to run back and forth between computers to get one and post
elsewhere, but Unison doesn't actually give me one, just spins endlessly
on group icons with everything except "get group" grayed out, and trying
that has no effect at all. I tried feeding it giganews here and there
to no effect. Thunderbird just sits there and does nothing at all.

I have been subscribed to news.eternal-september.org on Thunderbird
since time immemorial. I dimly remember something about a name change
that didn't affect me. eternal-september is still indicated in headers.
I suggest you Google the above address and follow up on what you find.
Is it possible your previous attempt to subscribe involved an
involuntary misspelling?

If it were a single try, I'd think it might be, but that was my first
suspicion, so I was VERY careful on aubsequent attempts.

PEBCAK. Check to make sure you've configured WeverTF you're using to
access Usenet, to a port associated with NNTP (Net-News Transfer
Protocol).

 $ grep nntp /etc/services
 nntp 119/udp # Network News Transfer Protocol
 nntp 119/tcp # Network News Transfer Protocol
 nntps 563/udp # nntp protocol over TLS/SSL (was snntp)
 nntps 563/tcp # nntp protocol over TLS/SSL (was snntp)

E-S supports both, AFAICT.

If the port is correct, make sure you have something resembling a
configured DNS:

    Open /Applications/Utilities/Terminal.app
    type "dig +short A news.eternal-september.org" and hit return.

You should see that the "A" record points to 213.239.209.88. If it
doesn't, it's a sign your network configuration is b0rken.

    $ dig +short A news.eternal-september.org

Assuming you're an E-S subscriber, see their User Settings page:

If all else fails, RTFM.

The NNTP port, port 119, exists on news.eternal-september.org, as it
does on nearly all NNTP servers, for use with the Net-News Transfer
Protocol.

You need to configure your NNTP software to use this port, rather than
any of the other 65535 possible network ports.

>>> E-S supports both, AFAICT.

Did you try any of this part? It's going to tell you whether your
computer is connected to the Internet and whether it can resolve
hosts. It's rather important, if you are going to use the Internet,
with your new computer.

>>>     Open /Applications/Utilities/Terminal.app
             ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

This says the Terminal application is located within the Utilities
directory (folder), inside the Applications directory, at the root
level of your boot partition, what you think of as your Startup Disk.
(It's usually named, "Macintosh HD," by default.)

Once you locate it, double-click the icon, to launch the Terminal.

Otherwise, type command-space on your keyboard. When the Spotlight
search window appears, begin typing, "Terminal," and hit Return when
the name of the application appears.

>>>     type "dig +short A news.eternal-september.org" and hit return.

>>> You should see that the "A" record points to 213.239.209.88. If it
>>> doesn't, it's a sign your network configuration is b0rken.

>>>     $ dig +short A news.eternal-september.org
>>>     213.239.209.88

I've seen nothing from you to suggest you can even run a web-browser
successfully, on your new computer. All you keep repeating is,
"Nothing works," without ever defining what it is that isn't working.

>>> Assuming you're an E-S subscriber, see their User Settings page:
>>> <http://www.eternal-september.org/userfunctions.php>.

>>> If all else fails, RTFM.

>> Also mailed this to me.

Ah, but have you read the fucking manual, consulted the help files on
your computer, followed any of the available tutorials, checked any of
the hints, or read the directions E-S gives you on their support
pages, for configuring a newsreader to work with their servers?

P.S. You're overdue for that visit to an Apple Store. When you
finally do get there, take a look at their schedule of classes and
tutorials. You need hands-on help, which seems beyond the skills of
your trusted 'specializes in Macs" shop. Your shop appears to have
done you wrong.

To locate an Apple Store near your location, start at
<http://store.apple.com/>.

You might consider bringing whatever you're using for a router, along
with the rest of your kit. The Apple store might be able to help you
configure your network, in such a way, that all your devices can
communicate with each other. Things such as your network, file
sharing or screen sharing aren't going to configure themselves.

I'm sorry, John, but what you're asking isn't particularly clear.
There was a space, following the double dash of the .sig delimiter,
even though Thunderbird appears to have stripped it, when you replied.

Take a look at the raw message, where you will see that space.

Why would adding a ' <CR><LF>' before my name have any bearing on
anything?

You have it setup correctly, at least so far as how Thoth processes
replies.

No, there wasn't:

<https://groups.google.com/forum/#!original/comp.sys.mac.apps/-w-7Oby5lp8/qMdrAhKXs6wJ>

As you can clearly see, whatever fucked up combination of Usenet client
and configuration you are using (I suspect your silly PGP setup may be
involved - why you feel the need to include that in every Usenet post is
beyond me) is causing your signature delimiter to intermittently be
incorrect.

The signature delimiter should be exactly this: a line consisting of two
dash characters followed by a space character followed by a line feed
character. This is described in section 4.3 of RFC 3676:

<https://www.ietf.org/rfc/rfc3676.txt>

<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Signature_block#E-mail_and_Usenet>

> Take a look at the raw message, where you will see that space.

>     <http://al.howardknight.net/msgid.cgi?ID=142940115100>

You are ignoring the single dash character and space that precedes it on
the same line.

David Ritz <dritz@mindspring.com>

But the double dash, space, CR needs to start and be on one line.
>

Because that strips the sig. in Thunderbird, and is standard OP.

It worked fine in this post of yours. I thought you could perhaps
configure to do it automatically, or scrub the PGP altogether.

Take care!
