How do you drag from one > machine to another with a mouse? You turn on file sharing on the old machine and mount the old machine as a volume on the new machine by selecting Go -> Connect to Server on the new machine in the Finder. If the old machine appears and mounts as a volume on your new machine, double click on the volume icon and navigate to the Applications folder on the new machine and drag the application icon to the Applications folder on the new machine. If the old machine doesn't appear, then you can use a USB drive or a file sharing service like Dropbox. -- Jim Gibson

Fuck me, George, learn to read what I wrote. You mount the disk from the other machine on your Desktop. Then you open a Finder window on that disk, and navigate to the Applications folder so you can see your old Pages. You can do cmd-I (Get Info) on that app to confirm that it's the old version. If you open a Finder window on your local boot disk, where the Applications folder is, and open that, you can *then* drag the old Pages from the old machine into your new one's Applications folder. I > still don,t understand how that "disk" gets from one to the other. As you find even the most basic of functions beyond your limited abilities, you might consider making less of a nuisance of yourself, by requesting answers you will undoubtedly find incomprehensible. Please make an appointment at the Genius Bar, pack up your old laptop running ML, your iPad and your new computer running Yosemite up, and take all three items to your Apple Store. Once you and your hardware are all at the store, at the same time, ask them to do the _migration_ from your old laptop, to the new computer. Once the migration is completed, all applications which will run under the up-to-date OS will have transferred to the new machine, your files, libraries, music, media, iBooks will now reside on the new computer. The migration may take several hours, depending on how much data you're moving. Next, request that your genius do the synchronization of your iPad for you, as it is so far beyond your skill set, as to boggle the imagination. If you Genius doesn't have to explain anything to you, none of which is likely to stick, it will make everything go much more quickly. Depending on what you normally load onto your iPad, this, too, may take hours. Finally, ask your Genius how you can learn to sync your iPad, so that your music, media, whatever other documents and files your whining aren't 'in your applications' and iBooks appear on both your iPad and your new Mac. Pay close attention. Once you have this synchronization process configured, on your _new_ computer, the one that scares the shit out of your, but which you really haven't bothered to learn, only sync to that new computer running Yosemite. Remember, your Genius appointment will be a waste of time, if you do not bring all of the gear, at the same time. You may not understand how to network your devices, but they'll be able to do it for you, at the Apple Store. Print this message out and bring it with you on your visit to the Apple store. This is probably the best advice you've received, since getting in way over your head, when you bought your new Mac. Face it, you're technically declined. -- David Ritz <dritz@mindspring.com> Be kind to animals; kiss a shark. -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v2 iEYEARECAAYFAlUzLcIACgkQUrwpmRoS3uuhtwCgqLDIrng4Z9JweHJ33lxcOWDb VsYAoM63J+AeesggzPsjz2bT/dbtPOo1 =NdRg -----END PGP SIGNATURE-----

When I bought this thing, all the files from my old laptop were transferred to the new one by a tech at a place that specializes in Apple hard- and software and service, though not one of those iStores. The plan was that I would then delete the ones that didn't work, but in the case of many, I didn't have a chance to even try that, as Yosemite apparently immediately converted many to its own version when I tried to open them. -- biblioholic medievalist

There is a HUGE difference, between copying everything from the old Mac, to the new one, and hoping everything gets sorted out in the end, and migration. I suspect your Mac specialist followed your instructions, rather than doing things the right way. This is the source of almost all your self-inflicted frustrations and misconceptions regarding Yosemite. Again, bring your complete kit to the Apple store and have them do the proper migrations. P.S. Migration is offered the very first time one boots a new Mac, as part of the initial setup. -- David Ritz <dritz@mindspring.com> Invalid assumptions tend to produce invalid conclusions. -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v2 iEYEARECAAYFAlUzx74ACgkQUrwpmRoS3utONwCbByZxPZ1d2il5+9ApXRbc0KiG 22wAoJnPOxXnzLyb96S2PJclN09eEiJh =3LW6 -----END PGP SIGNATURE-----

But a wire (like Firewire or USB cable or wifi maybe) can make *an icon* of that disk appear another computer. The icon is *caused* by the hard drive in the first computer like a light is caused to come on by the switch that is distant. And that icon, suitably clicked, can make appearances on this second computer that reveal the contents of that disk etc. -- dorayme
