Pages on the iPad is not the downgrade. Thats the one that came with the
new laptop.

Nothing to do with purchase history. The downgrades came with Yosemite.

Why would you post a message about a problem with iPad restoration to
"all four of the groups I read on my iPad"? It had nothing to do with
travel or medieval studies. And when you say "only the first [message],"
you obviously didn't set the Followup-To header to the iPad group. Yes,
other people should have noticed that and trimmed the Newsgroups line on
their responses, but those other groups never should have been there in
the first place.

What the hell does Yosemite have to do with restoring your iPad???

she bought a new mac which came with yosemite and the migration from
old to new was not done properly, which is why it blew away the ipad.

Fine, but her complaint was that the restored apps on the iPad were
"empty"--they apparently had no associated user data. Then she said
that one of the apps--Pages--had, in the process, been upgraded to
a different version that she didn't like. Now she says that she isn't
talking about iOS Pages but rather OS X Pages. That has nothing whatsoever
to do with the badly restored apps on her iPad. She's either very confused,
or she's muddying the conversation by complaining about two different things.
If she ended up with a new version of Pages on her iPad, then she did NOT
restore from her backup, but rather obtained the app from the App Store.

It seems I get confused when sufficiently upset. Sorry. The new downgrade
of Pages is on the laptop. The iPad has the version it had before, but its
content was gone. However, most of its content was on the old laptop in a
folder whence I replaced the most urgent stuff.

I'm currently keeping iPad and new computer apart, and just discovered it
could have been unimaginably worse. No more than 5% of the content of my
iBooks is from Apple. I've been snarling about not being able to see the
listing of accumulated books and .pdf files there, and in the process of
seeking to find out whether there might be a slightly earlier version of
iTunes that would work on Yosemite and let me see the iBooks info in it, I
read horror stories about what the iBooks downgrade did to the collections
of others!

All the info on off-line maps, everything in Pages, and lots more. At least
I won't be wasting time playing games. Not Angry Birds, though. I got tired

I think Pages stores its copies in the cloud, not in the app on the
iPad. Won't bet my life, but.....

Only if you're using the cloud to begin with

Probably look to have the iPad backed up to iCloud.

Or if you sync to your Mac regularly (which means turning on Wifi
syncing or plugging in the cable), then do regular backups of the Mac on
Time Machine.

You should be able to restore iPad to your last backup, which would be
backed up every day if you plug in to charge or manually have it back up.

Tried that. It restored the apps from the store, mostly empty of data.
