How do I get something like that? Nothing is working for me.

Something is wrong, so trash Unison, reinstall, and resetup. What you
are expriencing should not be happening. There is something going on
with your local setup that you either haven't discovered, or you are
not telling us. Once you hav your giganew set up the groups should
populate quite quickly and not freeze up. You should end up with a list
of groups as above, and then it is simple enough to subscribe to the
groups you want..

OK, something to try in late May when I get back. The new laptop is going
nowhere with me.

I wouldn't let it go for hours. If it's not done in a few minutes,
obviously something went wrong. So I'd cancel and try again.

Still not sure what you meant by refusing images, though.

I use binsearch to find binaries and thrown the nzb files at sabnzb+

Much better than dealing with the shortcomings of the various GUI clients.

OTOH, I nearly never do that anyway, but I did download like 4000 images
from the fractals newsgroup a few years ago.

Yosemite over there(I'm at old-faithful-but-full on the kitchen table)

MacSOUP works fine on Yosemite. (I'm running this combination.) Its last
update was to fix some issues when running on Mavericks. It didn't need
any updates for Yosemite.

Note that MacSOUP <http://www.haller-berlin.de/macsoup/> really requires
you read the manual. It's not long, and isn't hard to understand. But
MacSOUP does behave in some slightly odd ways harking back to pre-GUI
days. For example - one simply closes the window of a new post to save
and queue it for sending.

MacSOUP is also text-only, with no native binary support. One can save
out binaries as text files and run the resulting file through a decoder
app, but it's a lot more trouble that it's worth. Still, most people use
BitTorrent nowadays for file sharing.

Bit Torrent? Who are these most people who use Bit Torrent for file
sharing nowdays?

I share JPEG, NEF, mp3, m4v, and PDF, and some other files, mainly with
Dropbox, and Adobe Creative Cloud, occasionally with Box or Pogoplug.

Not that kind of file sharing. If you've been using Usenet binaries to
give other people your files, I assume you've been running either a
private Usenet server, or don't mind sharing them with the world ;-)

I only share binaries in two News Groups, but not so frequently these
days. Those are usually JPEG image files in
alt.binaries.pictures.aviation and alt.binaries.photos.original. I
don't download binaries from Usenet, and I don't use BitTorrent. I will
view images posted in those binary groups.

In non-binary groups I share image files and some m4v files via Dropbox
or Adobe CC links. Like this:

Indeed. With linking to files and free to cheap online storage for them,
actual Usenet binaries are far less useful nowadays.

But mostly the average guy down the street who either pirates content
because they lack ethics, or because rights holders continue to screw
around where they live and set the legitimate bar so high that the low
bar of pirating is easier, no matter the ethics.

Either way - far from the 'scum of the Earth' :-)
