SubjectBest way to make a digital music collection?
Message-ID<2015032022100721834-tomevans9890@yahoo.ca>
What's the best way to make a digital music collection?

I want to start buying songs from a 'streaming' service and be able to
categorize the songs into different libraries and play them on my Mac
and in the next room through my Airport Express and speakers there
(which I use to play songs from Net radio stations.

I also want to be able to shuffle the songs.

And is it a good idea to store the collections in a 'cloud' so that it
wouldn't take valuable space on my Mac and back-up drives?

And what's the best 'streaming' music service? Spotify?

"Streaming" means, you pay for a one-time listening pleasure, not for a
file which is saved on your equipment.

You can try out services like "last.fm" or "spotify" - but I cannot tell
anything ybout them since I don't use them.

Purchase CDs and encode them digitally by importing them into iTunes, or
purchase songs / albums directly from the iTunes Store, and enjoy. : )

You can't obtain songs to keep from streaming services. You can think of
a streaming service as a "pay to listen" service where you basically rent
your music rather than purchase it to own it.

> I also want to be able to shuffle the songs.

Streaming services do basically shuffle in that rather than you picking
the play order, the service plays various songs in whatever order the
service chooses. If you want more control than that, then you want to
own your music instead. So you want to purchase to own from Apple's
iTunes library rather than stream your music.

iTunes Match is really cool for this sort of thing, because it looks at
all of the MP3/AAC/etc files you already own and then matches them with
equivalents in the iTunes Store (in the cloud), which makes all of them
instantly available on all computers and devices using iTunes Match.
Another benefit of iTunes Match is that it removes all advertising from
iTunes Radio, Apple's free music streaming service (similar to Pandora).

> And what's the best 'streaming' music service? Spotify?

Maybe. I'm happy with iTunes Radio though. I switched from Pandora to
iTunes Radio a while back and am enjoying it. Since I use iTunes Match,
there are no ads.

To expand on this:

Once a song from the iTunes library on your computer has been matched by
iTunes Match, the song is available to you in the cloud. If you have
that song copied to any other computers or devices, you can delete the
song from those devices to save space, but can still play the song on
those devices from the cloud without them taking up space. For instance,
after I matched the iTunes library of music on my Mac Pro with iTunes
Match, I was able to delete tens of gigabytes of music from my iPhone
and turn on iTunes Match in Settings. After doing that, I have *much*
more free space available on my iPhone for other things; but I still
have access to all of that music as long as I have network connectivity.
When I play one of my songs on my iPhone, it just streams it from the
cloud to the device. If I want to store some music on the phone, I can
still do that as well. All in all, it's very handy.

Yet another benefit:

Apple doesn't care much about where the songs in your library came from
originally. If you have songs that you downloaded from some pirate site,
for instance, Apple will happily match those as well when you use iTunes
Match. Further, if you delete those songs from your library, and then
download them from the cloud, what you download is Apple's high-quality
version of the songs. This means you can effectively replace your
pirated music with pristine legitimate copies from Apple. ; )

There are pristine pirated copies these days.

I wouldn't know. The only pirated stuff I have anymore is from years
ago, given to me by friends and family. The overwhelming majority of my
music is encoded from CDs that I own or purchased from iTunes Store. And
even if pirated copies are high quality, iTunes Match effectively gives
you a way to replace them with 100% legitimate copies, as if you
purchased them from iTunes Store legally.

I've never used iTunes except to sync up an old (very old) iPod. We only
got the iPod because it was a free gift when we bought MacBook Pro. I
keep my music as (mostly) flac on its own drive and managed with Kodi
(XBMC as was).

Neve heard of it before. Looks interesting, but Kodi is free, as in free
beer.

So it iTunes. Home Sharing works great for sharing all of my content.

Can you can you play 1080p movies over it onto a 50" tv? I know iTunes
works well for music. I actually set it up about three years ago, for
the sole purpose of using that cute screensaver that you can make with
the album art.

mere details.

Touch. (I have an Ipod somewhere, but it's about a decade old, so I
don't think it's a Touch model.)
