#28064 — Automatic videos on websites

I've run into a few web sites that start automatically playing videos
on the site, this is very problematic when there are more than one
video, sometimes up to six all start playing at the same time.

Is there a setting or preference that can turn off automatic play?

If you are using Safari, you can use the excellent ClickToFlash or
ClickToPlugin to prevent such behavior:

<http://hoyois.github.io/safariextensions/clicktoplugin/>

Other browsers such as Firefox have similar plug-ins modules and
extensions that do similar things. I'll leave those web searches as an
exercise for you. : )

I have ClickToFlash installed and it blocks Flash but with Safari I've
run into the multi-videos on automatic, is there some other setting or
preference in ClickToFlash to stop this behavior?

Can you post a couple of links to those odd sites?

Can you simply avoid them in the future?

That depends on the particular site and type of video, of course. Can't
really answer without knowing more.

An example of 6 playing? The truth is that so many web pages are so
badly or annoyingly made that closing page, the tab or window is the
best option.

Okay, so one time? In band camp? <henry@att.net> <henry@att.net> was all, like:

I find ⌘W works very well. But then I avoid websites that are
user-hostile as much as possible.
