#27657 — Silverlight no longer works in Chrome.

Silverlight no longer works in Chrome in my Outlook email account.

I just downloaded and installed the Silverlight update on my Imac but I
still got an error message that I need to update my Silverlight.

I also restared Chrome but it still won't work.

I also re-downloaded and re-installed Silverlight but it still won't work.

I even restarted the Mac but it still won't work.

In Chrome when I press on the "View Slide Show" link, the pop-up window
says every time that I need to install the update to Silverlight before
I can see the slide show but I just installed the update twice.

I have Yosemite on a 2011 Imac.

I just tried opening the image in Outlook using Safari, and I got the
same, problematic message: that I need to update Silverlight.

Which version of the Silverlight plugin do you have installed? You can
find out by going to the folder /Library/Internet Plug-Ins/ then
selecting Silverlight.plugin and doing a Get Info.

From a quick look at the Microsoft page, it appears the latest Mac
version is 5.1.30514.0 (released 2014-07-23, though the installation
might not reflect that date).

From a little hunting it appears there is a later version 5.1.31211.0
(released 2014-12-13) which is only available for Windows. It fixed an
issue in a slightly earlier version 5.1.31010.0 but I haven't spotted
any release notes on what changed in that version.

I don't know if Silverlight has a mechanism to require a specific update
revision or later (or to require an update if there is a known security
issue or newer DRM format), but if it does and the slide show in your
email message requires Silverlight 5.1.31211.0, then it won't be
possible to view it on a Mac (with Silverlight 5.1.30514.0), because the
latest version of Silverlight doesn't exist on the Mac.

Either that, or the slide show is damaged, or the Silverlight plugin is
blocked or disabled in both web browsers.

Perhaps there is some sort of malware trying to get you to install a
fake silverlight and you aren't getting it because you're not on
Windows?

Isn't Silverlight a dead product?

Chrome Version 40.0.2214.94 (64-bit) (latest per "about").

Silverlight 5.1.30514.0 (15 May 2014 version (or install date?)).

All is well in Chrome (plays Netflix video).

Of course that assumes Netflix is still streaming out to Silverlight as
Netflix have announced they are moving on to HTML5 over the next year or
so since MS have dropped SL.

They are. I wish they'd hurry up and drop it. My old Mac mini Core 2 Duo
would perform much better without Silverlight clogging things up.

I searched for "40.0.2214.94" on my Mac but nothing was found. Does
that mean that the file isn't on my Mac?

I found that on my Mac.

There was another Chrome update a few days ago. The current version is
now 40.0.2214.111.
