#24039 — Copy photo albums from iPad to Mac?

FromEd Anson <EdAnson@comcast.net>

SubjectCopy photo albums from iPad to Mac?
Message-ID<NvGdnfL71p9263jOnZ2dnUVZ_oSdnZ2d@giganews.com>
My wife recently returned from a three-month tour of New Zealand. She
took her iPhone and iPad along, but left her Mac at home. She wound up
with something like a thousand photos on her iPad, which she has edited
and organized into albums in the Photos app.

Now, she wants to have those albums on her Mac, in iPhoto.

We had no trouble getting the photos into iPhoto, but have found no way
to migrate the albums. Since she has a lot of time and effort invested
in creating those albums, we are trying to find a way to avoid having to
do it all over again.

I Googled my question. Google promptly provided me with many, many
articles about how to go the other way. Not much help. There were some
other articles that seemed to indicate that what we want is not
supported. The only suggested work-around was two years old, and does
not work.

So, before we give up and do all that work over again, I thought I'd
check whether someone knows something I've missed.

Thanks for any helpful suggestions.

/Ed

This has always worked for me to move image files in either direction,
but that isn't your actual problem.

As for the album issue I fear she might have to repeat that work.

Just out of interest, how many albums does she have? The best solution I
can think of might be to copy one album at a time, and name that event.
Of course, if she has more than one event in each album, that would
complicate things.

Because it was a three month tour, and because each day is treated as a
separate event, she has a rather large number of events. Her albums are
NOT based on events. She has several albums organized by topic, and each
draws from quite a number of events. If the relationship between the
events and the albums were simpler, there wouldn't be a problem. What
we're up against is the time and effort required to create each album.

BTW: I was really surprised when I learned that albums don't sync even
though there is a sync function. You can move albums from the Mac to the
iPad, but you apparently can't move them the other way. Any changes made
on the iPad are lost the next time you "sync" with the Mac.

I would LOVE to learn that I'm wrong on this, that I've missed
something. But so far all I'm hearing is that I haven't missed anything :-(

No you're not wrong about this. iTunes is the same way. The Mac acts as
the master and the iOS devices are the slaves unless you sync everything
with iCloud. I assume you haven't done that yet? Personally, I've
heard stories about stuff been trod on by the unintelligent way iCloud
handles sync-ing so I've stayed away from it.

Try uploading all the iPad photos to Dropbox or Google Drive. The
albums are constructs of the iPad's software and probably won't transfer
but the photos most likely will.

You might try bringing your Mac and iPad into your nearest Apple Store
and scheduling some time with an Apple Genius to see if they can solve
this problem.

That's actually a fantastic suggestion, because it will force a genuine
Apple employee to see and admit there is a problem (and hopefully pass
it up the chain) and potentially figure out a solution for it.

'genuine Apple employee', aka clerk, aka genius, have about as much
influence at Apple as a wet, used kleenex. Hmm, the later probably has
more influence.

I would find it hard to believe that Apple pays absolutely no attention
to legitimate issues encountered by customers while interacting with its
retail store customer service staff, or that there is no opportunity or
staff to pass things up the chain. And you are ignoring that the OP
may just walk out with the problem solved. But you go right ahead and
discourage the OP from attempting to get help if it helps your ego.

I find it hard to believe that you're so hair trigger sensitive.

There are hundreds of Apple stores. Thousands of relatively low wage
Apple store employees. Their contribution up is highly filtered and
dampened, just as customer feedback is.

Whatever helps your ego. I'm just trying to help the OP. You, on the

Sorry, but this is absolutely useless, and not just because it's PC based.

Ed-

I have the demo version of a Mac program called "iPad File Explorer" (or
iPadFileExplorer). It runs under recent versions of OS X, and works
with my iPad 2 connected with the USB cable. I do not know if there are
Windows versions.

The program can see the file structure of the iPad. Opening the iPad
device, there are two folders: Applications and Storage Root.

Inside Storage Root there are numerous folders including one named DCIM.
Inside DCIM there are several folders that appear to be my photo albums
but with cryptic names. Just for a test, I successfully dragged one of
the albums to the Mac's desktop.

This program may be capable of solving your problem. Being a free demo,
it is worth a try. However, you might mess up your iPad if you aren't
careful!
