Is it still possible to download a trial version of Aperture or was that
option removed when it went to the MAS?

I know all about the end of life but wanted this for one specific purpose.

Very helpful, thank you, led me to the answer I was after. At the time
I posted I was unable to google information easily. Apologies for
bothering you personally with a question rather than google it for
myself.

What specific purpose might that be?

Otherwise I suggest going to Lightroom 5 (you can get a 30 day trial for that).

Gawd, don'cha hate it when people question your motives--in effect,
your competence to know what you want--and instead of answering your
question, they tell you what you *should* want?

You are right, of course. How could I forget the lessons of freedom,

When that happens, yes.

But often if a person states the underlying reason, other alternatives
that might be quicker, better, stronger, cheaper, etc, may be revealed.
Given the current tenor of usenet, probably not...sadly.

If you explain what your underlying requirements are then other people
may suggest alternative ways of them being met. If you ask for help,
people will try and be helpful and this may include trying to work out
what you really need and offering alternative suggestions.

Perhaps, but my point is that, prima facie, O.P. Steve Hodgson asked
where he could download a trial version of Aperture, and explained that
he understood that it was being discontinued, but that he wanted
Aperture for "one specific purpose."

That sounds to me like a man who has done his homework and knows what
he wants, and does not need to have his motives questioned and to be
told that he should try a different product. Instead, he deserves a
straightforward reply or none at all (which is what I gave him, because
I didn't know the answer to his question).

maybe, but there isn't a trial anymore, so it would help to know what
that one specific purpose is so a solution can be found.

I have replied to that elsewhere. I have a colleague at work who wishes
to create a photo book using the photos he has stored in iPhoto. BUT he
also needs to be able to edit the aspect ration of the 'frames'.
Aperture will do this and iPhoto will not.

I appreciate there are other photo book services available but I
believe he is keen to go through Apple for this and who am I to argue?

With iPhoto's Crop tool you can set the ratio to what ever you want.
The ratio of the pictures in most Apple photo books are set by the
number of photographs on a page, and whether you select both horizontal
and/or vertical frames.

No, very different. The reference to iPhoto's crop tool is referring to
a separate operation on the photo in iPhoto to crop the photo. Aperture
allow the frame used within the book to be edited to whatever aspect
ratio is required. iPhoto books don't have the same sort of granularity.

I *know* there are lots of different ways to skin this particularly
cat, I'm just trying to find out if it's possible to use the
application my colleague asked my advice about.
