So the question remains as to what advantages there are to hand editing
the URL compared to using the popup menu? (Well, in Safari 8, the
advantage is that there is no popup menu, but what about earlier
versions?)

Maybe none. I don't really care that much about it, honestly. It's just
not something I spend a whole lot of time doing to begin with.
Personally I expect selecting a menu item to do something useful. While
it seems to be a nice feature, I don't consider holding a key on the
keyboard while clicking a title bar to be any more efficient than simply
editing the URL directly by hand. Like I said, to each, his own. Choice
is good. : )

If it's a long URL, hand editing it can be a pain since the URL field is
just one line. Getting to the appropriate place in the URL is sometimes
tricky.

Yeah, that's a good point too.

That's what I was talking about.

That's something completely different, and has been in every version of
Safari and most other browsers.

Please file a bug on this. It will be marked a dupe, but that's fine.
The more the merrier.

More likely, it will be marked as "works as designed". Nevertheless,
I'm reporting it with the Feedback Assistant included with the beta of
Yosemite.
