When I open an .srt subtitle file saved from an application like Subs Factory or Aegisub with textedit or NeoOffice, it changes the first subtitle line number from a 1 to a zero, and throws off the whole file line numbering lower by one. Does anyone know why and how to counter it? It is useful for me to have actual and accurate hard copy of these files.

If I load or construct an srt file into either Aegisub or Subs Factory, the first line is number with a "1" as it should be. If I take this same srt file and open it with either TextEdit or NeoOffice, the first line is changed to a zero. Happens every time.

You have two files, almost identical, one saved in the editor that uses 1 for first numeral, and the other that uses 0. You play the film and you switch between the two .srt files, does the one synchronise and the other not with the scene and/or lips of the characters on screen? -- dorayme

Can you upload one of the affected .srt files somewhere and provide a link so others can see for themselves? What you are describing doesn't make sense. .srt files are plain text, and TextEdit doesn't change the content of any plain text file - it just shows what is in the file, as should NeoOffice, and as would QuickLook, TextWrangler or similar plain text editors, or even using the 'less' command in Terminal. I suspect that your .srt files really do have subtitles numbered starting at zero, but software like Aegisub which understands the file format knows that is incorrect and is silenty renumbering everything to start at subtitle 1. Assuming I'm right, the problem is most likely to be with whatever software was used to create your .srt files, not what you are using to look at them. -- David Empson dempson@actrix.gen.nz

Thanks David, No, it doesn't make any sense. It was a royal pain when I was trying to do these Spanish subtitles two weeks ago. I even have the hard copy printouts of them. But I just tested my finished srt file with both TextEdit and NeoOffice, and both behaved perfectly. If I didn't have the original hard copy, I would write it off to bad behavior during the summer of love. As it is, I have no explanation, but I won't worry about it unless it happens again. Ironically, the video I was translating is called Freq of Nature. But I think it has something to do with the process I used. Hoping to shortcut the timing, I downloaded the video from youtube and it gave me also the English caption srt. My plan was to use their timing sequence and translate the caption srt's line for line. So I opened it up in TextEdit and got that zero problem. Same with NeoOffice. Since the zero made the first line useless, the only solutions I could think of was to try to squeeze the first line into the next couple, trying not to screw up the timing that much, or renumber all 230 lines manually. Shortly I realized that the timing part of the youtube srt was also really crappy, so after completing the translations, I redid the timing from scratch. So it has something to do with how youtube does downloadable srt files which I captured through iSkySoft iTube Studio. But it is not important, because I would never try that method again anyway.

I just loaded a .srt into Subtitles TheEditor, then looked at it with Quicklook and then loaded it into textedit to see about these "changes". No changes: Example: http://grab.by/xAkE
