Hi there!
I'm a newbe in using a Mac and I love it!

There is a "problem" I cannot solve and that's why I'm here :-)

Question:

How do I prevent some programs, like Adobe reader, Teamviewer,
starting when I turn on my Mac?

Do hope to hear from you.

Start System Preferences, choose Users & Groups, select your account
and click on Login Items. See if the programs you mention are listed
there. If so, click each to highlight it and then click the "-" (minus)
to remove it.

Otherwise, I don't know.

An easier way to determine if the applications are loading at login.
1. Go to the icon of the application in question in The Dock.
2. Click and hold until the context menu comes up Continue
holding,scroll to options
3. Scroll down to Open at login if it has a check mark beside it click
on so that the check Mark disappears.

Jan, first, welcome to the group and the Mac! We can be a bit of a
contentious lot (hey, this is Usenet!), but we're generally helpful.

Just in case this happens again and you don't find the annoying item in
the Login Items list, you can look in these places also:

(Note: not all folders may exist on any particular installation.)

/System/Library/LaunchDaemons/
/Library/LaunchDaemons/
~/Library/LaunchDaemons/

/System/Library/LaunchAgents/
/Library/LaunchAgents/
~/Library/LaunchAgents/

/System/Library/StartupItems/
/Library/StartupItems/
~/Library/StartupItems/

/Library/Application Support/ [may or may not lauch items at startup]

Jan-

I am glad you found the solution. I have a similar problem, but the
guilty Apps are not set to open at login.

It seems that somewhere around OS 10.8, Apps that were running when you
shut down the computer, will automatically start up with the previous
document (or open a new document) when you reboot. Just closing a
document does not always cause the App to close.

So I always make sure all my Apps are closed before shutting down the
computer. Normally a Command-Tab will show open Apps. However some
Apps such as TextEdit and Preview do not show up with Command-Tab unless
there is an open document. The only way to see that they are still
running, is with Option-Command-ESC.

Apple must think this characteristic is a good feature to have, but to
me it is quite a nuisance!

The shutdown dialog contains a checkbox to [dis/en]able the resumption of apps
running at shutdown. Set it the way you want and its state will be remembered for
shutdowns.

Next time you shut down, look at the shutdown dialog. Uncheck the
"Reopen windows..." box.

Alan and Tom-

I normally press the option key while shutting down, so seldom see the
shutdown dialog. When I looked at it, I found that the box was NOT
checked.

I wonder if using the option key acts like the box is checked? I need
to run some experiments!

It probably just remembers whatever setting you last used.

What OS are you using? Do they start after login?

In mine, Snow Leopard:

System Preferences/Accounts/Login Items

Sys Prefs is a menu item under the Apple menu as well as probably in
the dock as an icon. I delete all items in the panel on Login Items.
Suits me.
