This happened to me after I clicked on the iCloud icon in the Safari toolbar.

Every bookmark and folder I've ever made was suddenly restored. Now I've got a huge mess of unwanted bookmarks all mixed in with the ones I DO want.

This is why use a bookmark manager like BookMacster. It's a 3rd party
manager for multiple browsers. Chrome used to do this to me, making a
mess of my bookmarks when I'd turn off my MacBookPro for a month or two.
Then when I turn it on, the old bookmarks would merge with any changes
leaving a mess.

You might try going back in TimeMachine to see when what the last good
copy of your bookmarks. No TimeMachine? Well, now you get to clean it
all up by hand, then order a 3 TB disk to do TM backups.

This happens to me with Chrome when Chrome on my Kindle Fire syncs up --
the Kindle sends its old version of bookmarks up to the cloud, and then
Chrome on the Mac merges them in.

1. Go to this location in the Finder: /Users/you/Library/Safari. You
should see a file named Bookmarks.plist there.
2. Enter Time Machine, and restore the previous version of the
Bookmarks.plist file.
