#9004 — What is the secret to Download Xcode 4.3.2?

This must now be downloaded via the AppStore.  I click Install and login 
but then nothing happens.  What am I supposed to be doing that I am not 
doing?

I think you need 10.7 and an AppleID to download from the Apple Store.  
When I click on AppStore stuff, it creates an icon on my Dock and starts 
downloading.  If that's not happening, try a free application and see if 
that works without problems.  

If it does, try installing from an Admin account.  Xcode has to go into 
a bunch of special places and it needs Admin to do that.  That's just a 
SWAG, but give it a go.

The App Store works in 10.6. However it's a stupid idea for free and
bundled software, as it ties them into the same DRM and need to use an
AppleID that bought software requires.

For example - a client recently bought a new Mac, upgraded the bundled
iApps (iPhoto, etc) when automatically prompted and they became DRMed.
They then realised they no longer subscribed to .Mac/Me/whatever it is
now and their login to App Store was myname@mac.com.

Now yes they could have changed the primary email, but they didn't know
that. They had no previous purchases through the App Store (they'd only
tied their .mac email to the App store to download the Twitter app for
free). They simply made a new AppleID using their current email. Then
they got around to installing the free apps that are now App Store only
that they require - Twitter, etc. That's when the problems began...

First when iPhoto was updated again they had to sign out and sign in
using their old AppleID - which they finally figured out after an
AppleCare support call. But then Twitter was updated. They had to work
out (they're very much a non-geek BTW) how to reverse the above and get
signed in with the right AppleID.

Finally after several frustrations like this they contacted me for help.
I advised them (having had some painful experience here) to try to
'merge' AppleIDs <appleid.apple.com/> by (and boy was this more annoying
than it had to be) creating a throwaway Gmail account, adding it to the
new AppleID, making it the primary email contact, removing their current
email as a contact (you can't have the same email as primary
contact/AppleID for two AppleID accounts), abandoning (simply by
ignoring) their new account, then adding their current email to their
old .Mac AppleID, making it primary, and redownloading the free apps
using it from the App Store.

This would have worked... but it turned out one of their bundled apps
was updated later using the newer now abandoned AppleID... and was now
tied to that account. So my advice failed. The poor non-geek user was
still stuck with his free apps in two accounts, and no obvious way to
get the iApp unlocked from his new and now abandoned AppleID without
reinstalling Lion!!

Later AppleCare suggested he contact the App Store support via email to
request a 'refund' for his free bundled iApp! They're now waiting to
hear back on that... poor bastard! :-D

Apple should NEVER EVER have allowed a situation where a non-geeky user
could tie themselves in knots with FREE Apps by friggin' DRMing them!
It's appallingly stupid.

The ONLY situation where a free bundled should be DRMed by the App Store
is if it's a paid upgrade. Till then it's upgrades should be handled by
Software Update as was previously the case.

One last thing - when I contacted AppleCare on behalf on this client the
support person was audibly frustrated with the new system of the App
Store taking bundled iApps hostage when they're updated. He said this
was a problem for many users he'd assisted, and the only thing he could
do was to suggest they contact App Store support using their refunds
email, or reinstall Lion to free the iApps from being DRMed with the
wrong AppleID account. Other than that he was powerless to help.

What a stupid situation Apple has created. Beware Lion users.

I don't have trouble downloading other apps, although the App Store 
insists I have updates I have previously installed.  I am also the 
administrator on this computer and am on 10.7.3.  My current version of 
Xcode is 4.2 and I have never been able to upgrade it.
