Google lets so much spam and off-topic crap through their web interface
I typically filter out any posts from Google Groups. The web-based view
also breaks some netiquette rules and so on. It's easy, but doesn't
really play well with others. : )

I often ignore posts from Google. Use a real news client instead.

Hmmm. By his red beard?

I think he'll identify himself.

Have you actually looked at the thread on GG? It is not as bad as you
are imagining. I am looking at it right now and it has no spam and the
only posts are what appear on my proper newsreader. I am on a Mac and
Safari. JR's suggestion is a good one.

Yes**, for a long complicated reason. And other threads, usually
because they were old and I'd searched for them. (Of course Google
weakened Advanced Search recently.)

**And I even copied one of the helpful posts and emailed it to my
friend.

Spam is not the problem. Even without GG, I get spam on other
newsgroups, not this one, and I don't like it but I ignore it.

The problem with GG is that when people who post from there, GG puts in
a blank line between every two lines. At least for some people. I'm
told there are 3 interfaces for GG and at least one does that, and at
least one doesn't. Then when they reply the next time, there is a
blank line inserted for every line of text and every blank line. It's 4
times as long as it should be, and hard to read.

Thanks.

I am looking at this very post in GG just to check and it seems
perfectly readable, perfectly ordered? I don't see blank lines between
*every* two lines? I must have the interface that does not. I agree
that would be unpleasant for those it happens to. I have done nothing
special to the settings?

When someone posts from GG, what I observe (using Thoth, but I think I
saw the same with MT-NW) is that the *quoted* lines become further and
further apart. So it goes something like this:

original posted text (I'm indenting these examples):

     first posted line
     second posted line

first reply from GG:

     > first posted line
     >
     > second posted line

and here goes the response to
     the first post

second reply from GG:

     >> first posted line
     >>
     >>
     >> second posted line

     > and here goes the response to
     >
     > the first post

     and this is the response
     to that post

and so on. And it gets worse and more ludicrous with each GG response.
And that gets dull and sodding tedious PDQ. So such posters end up in
the shit-can, not necessarily because of what they post, but because of
the tediosity of the process of trying to disentangle it all.

This is the aspect of which we complain.

OK, I guess it does not bother me much on the occasions I use it to
check on something that is difficult to survey on MT-NW, and secondly,
it is not all that more annoying than that generally people quote too
much in their posts.

Amen! Except I just realized that I'm not seeing that as much as
I used to. You may be on to something that it only happens with
certain interfaces to GG. If we could pin down the specifics,
we could try to get the problem posters to switch.

That sounds very likely. I don't remember seeing 'hisname' but otoh,
I don't even know what his name is there.

I'm sending him a copy of this and my previous post in this thread.

Actually, Arnold, this will help you only a little, unless you can
compare the user data (all the emails in one file, probably) from the
Macintosh HD compared to the Mac Backup, and we can't plug in the Mac
Backup yet. Maybe we could but I don't want to risk it, when a
couple hours more work will make it safe. But we could at least
compare file sizes, using Finder for Macintosh HD and your PC laptop for
the Mac Backup. But no rush about that either.

I'm going to be up late tonight. Maybe at 11PM we or I alone can have
another teamviewer session with the Mac.

He assures me again that he didn't do that. He just can't see them in
the trash bin.

Perhaps he never actually trashed them and they're in the Inbox, but
something prevents him from seeing them there. I use Agent for
newsrgroups, and for newsgroup posts, you can have lots of "views", like
unread messages, read messages, etc. Does Mail have anything like this
that might keep him from seeing mail that is right there?

(Of course Agent itself doesn't have these views for email, I don't
think.)

All the information for the files in the Trash is available, including

Why doesn't he just restore from backup? Time Machine would be best.

Oh. Yes. Of course he has no backup.

Maybe you could make this a teaching moment.

Next question: did he delete the files or did he delete the mail
box? (I'm not sure a mail box can be deleted without going into
Preferences, but I thought I'd ask.) Does the mail box still exist?

Micky-

Something about your problem does not make sense. I'm on an old
computer, and was not able to move Mail.app's Inbox to the trash. It
refused to go! Mine is version 4.5 of Mail.app, so yours may not be the
same.

The only way I could get the Inbox to disappear was to go to Mail.app's
View menu and select "Hide Mailboxes". If that is what happened to your
friend's mailbox, you can go to the View menu and select "Show
Mailboxes".

I think I saw the box that shows the version of the app, but I didn't
note what it was.

>The only way I could get the Inbox to disappear

This is my fault. Sorry. I see that the subject line says Inbox
deleted. I meant that all the mail in it was. But later I found out
even that's not so. A few were left and, it seems, thousands of emails
were deleted**.

He was attempting to delete "many", dozens or maybe hundreds of emails
that he didn't want anymore, and when he put the cursor on Mail Trash (I
guess that's when he got the message), it refused to delete that many.

Then all of a sudden -- maybe his finger twitched -- the email he
intended to delete and loads of other email was gone. Maybe he had a
visual reason to think it went to Mac Trash, or maybe he assumed it
would be there since it wasnt' in Mail Trash.

> was to go to Mail.app's

Somehow, even though it shouldn't since he says he sees a few emails in
the inbox, this sounds like a possibility. I'll check. He didn't
Monday night, and it was just as well since I slept from 3 in the
afternoon to 10 PM, I don't know why, since I slept Sunday night too.

Thanks.

The messages *would* be in the Mail Trash though - *unless* he emptied
the Mail trash sometime after dragging them there.

Were all of the messages from the same email account, or was he looking
at a combined view Inbox of all email accounts? Also, were the email
account(s) in question POP or IMAP? Depending on the answers to those
two questions, very different things can happen when you delete a
message.

Regardless of any of the above though, a Time Machine backup of his
computer would have allowed him to undo that "empty trash" action and
get them all back. So if he hasn't already, I highly recommend he set up
Time Machine backups for his computer (sorry if you've already mentioned
whether he has a Time Machine backup).

Time Machine would have saved his butt on this one. That's what you
should convince him to do, IMO.
