I'm trying to help a friend who deleted his mail by acciident from the standard Mac email program. I know PCs but not Macs. so the language I'm forced to use is PC-style What is the Mac Mail program called? What is the Mac Recycle Bin called? Can't he just open the the "recycle bin", find the inbox file for the email (What is the inbox called?) and do something that will put the deleted file back where it came from? Does the "recycle bin" show file size or file date? Those would be useful for determining which file it is, because he last updated the file today or yesterday, and it's a big file. Or does it give the fully-qualified name, which would be?? Thanks from me and him.

I asked this on the assumption that the files had gone to the recycle bin. Now I'm not sure where they went. Assume all his mail is in the Trash. What should he do to get them back in the inbox? Can he move them all back at one time? Right now he's on the phone and he's trying to put one onto the desktop, but maybe he can go straight to the inbox? Thanks. > >Can't he just open the the "recycle bin", find the inbox file for the >email (What is the inbox called?) and do something that will put the >deleted file back where it came from? > >Does the "recycle bin" show file size or file date? I posted here mainly to ask everyone to please read my next thread too, 2 posts about SuperDuper schedules, before writing an answer to posts in this thread. Maybe I should have put them in this thread but they made sense on their own. Thanks for all your help, everyone.

It seems he didn't put the mail in the trash mailbox.
He dragged them to the Trash icon. He says they are unrecoverable
from there. (Are there settings he could change so this wouldn't be
true in the future? )

Yes, he looked in the trash mailbox. It was empty.

Alternatively, he has SuperDuper, but he either could't find the
external drive to look in it with Find, or he found it but couldn't find
the Mail program or the Inbox. Is there some trick to that?
Thanks again.

The one in Mail or the one on the Mac desktop? Actually, at least in my version of Mail and the Mac OS, it doesn't matter; they end up in the Mail Trash. They should be recoverable from there unless he chose Erase Deleted Items from the Mailbox menu, in which case we've moved from accidental to intentional deletion of his messages. What steps has he tried to recover the messages from the Trash? Does he have Time Machine running? Patty

"Trash" on a Mac is a holding area. You can absolutely recover files from there until you empty the Trash. I just tried Mail on a 10.4 Mac, and when I deleted a message, it went into Mail's own Trash. I then selected Erase Deleted Messages, and as the warning said, the message completely disappeared; it did not go into the Mac Trash. Same behavior when I tried dragging a message from Mail Trash to Mac Trash; it just went away. So I don't know how your friend got his email into Mac Trash, but if it's there, tell him to drag the mail file out of the Trash and onto the Mac Desktop *immediately*. Then someone here can help you figure out where it needs to go to restore the Mail. I think it goes somewhere in ~/Library/Mail, but I'm not sure exactly which file you're dealing with, and you'll need to protect the mail that has come in to his mailbox since this file was moved out, so you can't just replace the current file. Patty

One thing to verify this, if the external drive is a bootable backup (as SuperDuper can do), start the machine up from the external and fire up the Mail.app program. Simplest way: * Shut the machine down. * Start it up but hold the Option key down * Choose the external drive * Turn off the internet connection (so nothing comes in to confuse the situation) * Fire up Mail.app Most of the stuff for Mail.app - on my Mac X OS at least - is stored in the user library under Mail and Mail Downloads folders. -- dorayme

In the left hand column were many entries, but one was I think MacDrive or HardDrive or something and 5 lines down was MacBackup. I started with the first one, (and maybe I clicked on Appications) and then on Mail, and maybe one more click and then it displayed the icon for the mail program and some statistics about it. Then I clicked on See More and it gave the size and location. The location was the main hard drive. Then I did the same thigns for MacBackup and when I clicked on See More, the size was the same, about 1.something Megabytes and the location was clearly given as MacBackup, something I missed two yearss ago when we were installing superDuper. Then I started again with the two drives and clicked on LIbrary, then Applications or Mail (I forget) then something else, and finally it came down to 3 files, 2 of which were labeled 4K, and another that was also small. This too was the same for both drives. He had also suggested reading the backup from another computer, and since his friend with a Mac moved away, he suggested his PC netbook, so he downloaded Catacombae, and installed it and plugged the external drive into the netbook, and the format looked a little more like Windows format, but we never found more email. The biggest file was 1 meg or so and he is missing maybe thousands of emails. >drive is a bootable backup (as SuperDuper can do), start the machine >up from the external and fire up the Mail.app program. In my today's reply to Patty, you'll see that using Finder I looked under Library and then under Mail and there were only 3 files there, all quite small, 4K for two of them. I should have said that that alone is strange since he still has some email in in his inbox, and more arrived Thursday and Friday. Did you create "mail downloads", or should he have that too. I didn't see it. He had intended to create more mailboxes but hadn't gotten around to it.

Maybe. What do you all use for reading news with a Mac? Is it included with 10.4?

There are various options (MacSoup, MT-NewsWatcher, Thunderbird, slrn, and so on); but probably the easiest (but by far not the best in most any way) is to just use http://groups.google.com to view and post to the comp.sys.mac.apps news group. All that is required for that is a web browser. -- E-mail sent to this address may be devoured by my ravenous SPAM filter. I often ignore posts from Google. Use a real news client instead. JR

Well I did say it'd be the easiest. : ) Thunderbird is probably your best bet then. -- E-mail sent to this address may be devoured by my ravenous SPAM filter. I often ignore posts from Google.
