#20949 — Weird iTunes error

Frompatty1@sonic.net (Patty Winter)

SubjectWeird iTunes error
Message-ID<52f2f055$0$52801$742ec2ed@news.sonic.net>
I was just trying to view the video podcast of yesterday's
panel discussion with "Sherlock" creators and cast members
at the Apple Store Regent Street. When I clicked on the play
button for the podcast, I got the error message:

"This movie requires QuickTime, which is not supported by
this version of iTunes."

This is on my work computer, which is running OS 10.8 and
iTunes 11. Notice that the error message didn't say that the
computer was missing a QT plug-in, but that this version of
iTunes simply doesn't support it. How could the latest version
of iTunes not support QuickTime??? Especially if QT is needed
to view a podcast recorded and posted BY APPLE ON ITUNES???!!

that's because it's using quicktime x, which does less than the
previous quicktime 7 did.

i don't know what codec the podcast is using, but you either need to
find a quicktime x version of the codec or upgrade to quicktime 7.

Good heavens, I knew that QT Player 7 was better than QT Player 10,
but Apple screwed up the plug-in, too? How do they expect people to
watch APPLE'S OWN PODCASTS???

Luckily, I'm home now and watching the video just fine on my own
iMac, running OS 10.6 and iTunes 10.

This is unbelievable!!

apple made the podcast??

what codec is it using?

isn't it?

quicktime x came out over 4 years ago and it *still* does less than
what it replaced. maybe one day they'll get around to feature parity.

Yes, as I said in my initial posting, it was a video of a panel
discussion at the Apple Store!

>what codec is it using?

I don't know. How does one tell? I just clicked the play button
on the iTunes Store website and a video window opened and started
playing...I don't see any way of getting information beyond the
info button that only describes the event, not the technical details.

right, but that doesn't necessarily mean apple themselves produced and
distributed it.

it could have been done by third party production company, who happened
to use an older codec.

open the podcast file in quicktime player 7 (i'm not sure if you can
get the info in qtx player) and do a get properties (cmd-j). it will be
listed at the top.

No, the idiot is being an idiot again and making shit up. The video from
the London Apple store worked just fine in iTunes 11 on 10.9 with no sign
of QT7 installed.

Then do you have any idea why it doesn't work in iTunes 11 on 10.8?

Without a direct link to the specific video in question, how can anyone
reliably answer your question?

You seem to be implying that I was negligent in not providing a link.
If you can tell me how to provide a URL for iTunes, I'll be happy to
do so! That has always been a frustration when I've wanted to point
friends towards something on iTunes. As I mentioned, it's the "Sherlock:
Meet the Filmmakers" event from the Apple Store Regent Street from Tuesday.

All you need to do is explore a bit to find it:

Oh, interesting. I never knew about that. I thought the arrow
next to "Subscribe" simply offered more subscription options.

Here's the "Sherlock" link:

https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/sherlock-meet-the-filmmaker/id815189745?mt=2

But, weird thing...when I launched iTunes on my work iMac just
now to try the link thingy, it said I had a podcast. I went to
that tab and clicked it, and it started playing. So apparently
my computer downloaded it and if I play it locally, iTunes shows
it. But I still can't get it to play directly from the iTunes
Store. Now the error message has disappeared and a video window
opens, but nothing ever happens. Too much inconsistent behavior
for me to figure out...

Well, it plays fine on all my 10.9 systems, even streaming it.

And since 10.9 runs on every machine that 10.8 does, there's absolutely
no reason to run 10.8.

But, I will point out, dumbass weasel-boy was wrong. Again.

I got that exact same error message with the latest Vintage Mac Video
entry on iTunes U. (It's the recently discovered video of Steve Jobs
introducing the Mac at the BCS.)

And yes, it doesn't make any sense to me either.

And fortunately for me, that particular video is available elsewhere on
the Web.

I have some VERY old files that generate the same message in iTunes.
They are MIDI files. When I try to open one using QuickTime (10.2), I
get a more informative message. It says that I need QT 7, and asks me
if I would like to install it. I have an old MIDI program that will
play these files, but nothing else on my computer will.
