I've been using Thunderbird for the best part of a year now - I just
couldn't get Apple Mail to play nice with GMail, whereas Thunderbird
just works. Plus, it does a better job of Usenet newsgroups than Unison
can manage.

I use POP with Apple Mail for Gmail.

No issues other than sometimes when I'm VPN-ing into the US and odd
things occur with the password.

I used IMAP instead, which is where the fun & games started. Not only
did I get multiple copies of emails - unless you go into GMail and
exclude the All Mail and some other folders from IMAP view - but I would
also get frequent error messages in Apple Mail caused by too many IMAP
requests to GMail. Reducing the number of folders / labels synced via
IMAP helped reduce the frequency of the complaints, but didn't remove
them entirely.

(I went with IMAP because I also like to check my email with Apple's iOS
Mail app on the iPhone and iPad.)

I use Gmail IMAP with Apple Mail with no problems.

E-mail sent to this address may be devoured by my ravenous SPAM filter.
I often ignore posts from Google. Use a real news client instead.

Well, I'm glad to hear it works for you. *shrug* As it is, I'm now a
happy Thunderbird user, and gradually cutting down my reliance on GMail.
I should add that Thunderbird does a great job of bulk-moving old emails
to my new account and to local storage. :)

I've been using Tbird pretty much since it came out. It was also my
mail client at work at one time and at home on Windows boxes (but no
longer).

It's still my principal usenet reader on Mac - though I've installed
Unison (the quirk machine) as well.

Well, it's not developed anymore and I was surprised to find an
upgrade... Makes me remember Netscape, pre AOL...
