OK, fine, got any facilities you would recommend that would download a lecture that is one and a half hours? Indeed, I would much prefer a way of getting the soundtrack that did not involve playing the whole thing on my Mac and capturing the sound, as one bit of software (that has been suggested) can do so ably from my initial tests. -- dorayme

Yes, I was praising this this feature, comparing it to where audio is captured from the Mac sound system. I am assuming now, since it is a critical criterion that you have plugins that will download *long* YouTube videos. I am trying to get the fastesttube, after doing it, and going to YouTube it says "You are using the old version of FastestTube. Please update it from kwizzu.com.". I did that but the same thing happens every time. And it does not appear in my plugins in Safari. -- dorayme

And it does not appear in my plugins in Safari. that's weird. mine is 2.2.0.1, dated december 23, 2013. there are also dedicated apps that can download youtube videos. the drawback is it's not integrated into the browser.

I am on Snow Leopard. I don't mind if it is dedicated or not, as long as it works easily and can be installed ok. -- dorayme

Ah... after a bit of fossicking in my Safari, it seems I *do* have some sort of add-on or plug-in, that *sometimes* puts a "QT Player" in a rounded rectangle on YouTube videos. If you click on this rectangle, it causes the film to load into and fire up QT7. Which is great because then I can just export the sound, choosing 'none' for video option. The facility does the downloading and playing in QT. I don't actually need to play it, as you will know, I just export. It works on a test I just did. I just forgot I used to have this "open in QT" facility. I got this facility in order to choose the exact size I wanted the film to play on my screen (not possible on the YT site afaik). Weird things are happening. Sometimes "QT Player" does not appear but "HTM5" does instead. This just happened on reloading the same YouTube video on YouTube! I need to sort all this out. I think the extension involved is ClickToPlugin 2.9.1. The ClickToPlugin prefs (able to be accessed by right click on a YouTube page) are very complicated with many panels. Maybe there is a PHd. course for it. -- dorayme

I have RealDownloader installed as part of Real Player, and it automatically keeps track of any videos on any web pages I visit with Safari in a neat little window so that I can just click a "Download" button next to them to grab them at any time (even long after I've closed the browser window). I find it pretty handy for this sort of thing. Depending on your needs, it may be overkill, or it may suit you just fine. It reminds me of the time I used to record radio programs with a microphone on a little tape recorder, all of the devices on a timer plugged into the wall. It worked! I sophisticated to one more level after a while, I connected the radio output jack to the recorder input with a cable. When podcasts came along, it was like getting a car with air conditioning and good sound proofing and decent wipers. <g> -- dorayme
