#20768 — Remote backup software supporting SFTP?

Anyone here using a Mac remote backup solution that supports SFTP
transfers? (I'm considering ChronoSync, but don't see SFTP specifically
mentioned on their web site.)

I have Chronosync (via a bundle) but haven't used it in anger. I can't
see any mention of support for FTP or derivatives. Its remote
connections require running ChronoAgent on the other computer.

Somewhat tangential, but it might be a useful tool in this case:

Scooter Software has Beyond Compare from version 4 in beta, which adds
native Mac OS X support. The Pro version of Beyond Compare 3 and 4
supports SFTP/FTPS.

http://www.scootersoftware.com/beta.php (new stuff in version 4)

http://www.scootersoftware.com/moreinfo.php (wider background, covering
version 3)

I've been using Beyond Compare 3 (and 2 prior to that) to do folder and
file comparisons and 3-way merge for software development on Windows. It
also has folder sync and can be scripted to automate tasks, but I
haven't used those particular features (yet).

If used for backups, it probably wouldn't be able to go as far as a full
computer backup, but should be sufficient for backing up folders for the
currently logged in user (where permissions won't be an issue).

The folder sync feature has modes to update just the left folder, just
the right folder, update both, mirror to left or mirror to right. The
"update" modes copy newer and orphan files/folders to the other side.
The "mirror" modes also delete files which no longer exist at the
source.

Thanks, David. The more I look, the more I am convinced to just roll my
own...

Why wouldn’t you simply use rsync (or rsnapshot with rsync)?

Laziness. : ) I'm only asking what solutions others may be using. I very
well may end up doing just that.

how well does sftp detect changed files? Looking the sftp manpage, it
doesn't mention any way to send a file if it's changed, just get and
put. That's fine if your "backups" are just remote copies rather than
sending files if they've changed.

rsync or rdist on older systems is the usual backup tool. if all you
want to do is push copies of files regardless of their changed status,
then sftp scripts are probably a better, cost-free solution.

If you want to synch folders using sftp, ftp, WebDav, and the cloud on
Google, Amazon or Rackspace, this might be a better fit (and about the
same price).

https://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/2747/interarchy

Personally, I use backuplist+ to synchronize folders. It's free and
uses rsync.

https://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/21413/backuplist%2b

If you absolutely must use sftp from a GUI tool, Interarchy will do it.
Otherwise, I think you're stuck using whatever transport mechanism for
connectivity that the backup package implements.

That's basically all I want: a copy. But I ant to be able to use a
remote host that only offers me SFTP access. I'll probably end up
rolling my own.

Exactly.

Thanks for the deets.
