#20186 — Help with Thoth

FromJoe W DiDomenico <joedid@outlook.com>

SubjectHelp with Thoth
Message-ID<251220131143175196%joedid@outlook.com>
I'm a very recent convert from Hogwasher, which, alas, has finally gone
to the slaughterhouse, it seems.

The transition to Thoth hasn't been too hard, even though its
livelihood is now also limited, if not finite.

The only things I haven't been able to do so far are:

1. Register/pay. I realize that might be impossible now, and although I
don't really mind the startup dialog prompt to do so, does anyone know
if the program will stop working after the purported 30-day trial?

2. Create a new personality. The option to do so on the File menu
merely takes me to a new post/message. I can't find an option to
actually create a personality. Maybe it's a factor of the program being
unregistered.

Thanks for any suggestions.

I think I can provide a version of Brian's advice: Read the manual.

That was unnecessarily smart-ass. I apologize.

I have Thoth, but don't use it often, and remember that "create
personality" is not particularly intuitive, so knew I'd have to open
Thoth, doink around and figure it out--for you. Just as you should if
you want to know and operate in Thothland.

File > New Personality

This apparently opens a "new post/message". Appearances are deceiving.
All the icons at the top of the display are greyed out, but the second
from right, the icon that looks like "preferences" is operational.
Click this. Here you can change the specifics of the personality for
your needs. "OK" when you are finished.

Still looking at this apparent "new post", you can add extra news
header lines, signature and other stuff.

When you leave this menu it will ask you if you want to save.

There you have it. Thoth is not the most intuitive program but it is
really quite deep. If you don't need any of this depth, I suggest you
pay a few bucks and get Unison. Why put your time and energy into a
program you can't readily purchase, and for which there is purportedly
no support?

If you have some good reason (like extensive message filtering), then
use Thoth, but you have to read the manual over the course of a weekend
and doink around in the thing to be able to use it fully. It's just
one of those kinds of programs.

Thanks for the apology.

If I had the manual I would've read it.

I figured it out.

Thanks, too, for the research and follow-up.

The manual is under Help in the menu.

Of course I looked there. The menu came up blank, other than the
generic Mac search field.

What version do you have? I find it under Help > User Guide.

If you're using a 30-day demo, it hardly matters.

I had a version that did that. The help files were in the folder but
the file type/creator was wrong so they did not show up in the Help
menu

Same as what happened here. I did find them eventually and managed to
read them with TextWrangler, but all this is moot: Brian refused to
register me even with my offer to pay handsomely (I might have left off
that last word) and so my trial will die in a few weeks.

Off to find another alternative (sorry grammar geeks.)

You can use a utility like "Quick Change" to change the file type of
the help files to TEXT and the creator to THTH and you will then see
them appear in the Help menu. But not in the rich text format that it
should be.

I'm not sure you'll be able to pay or get it registered as he has
pulled it. But you might try emailing him as someone recently said
they did and got it registered.

Thanks for the suggestion. It was no go. He's not interested in
registering any more users, even with an offer to pay for it.

Like I said, good riddance.
