So, anyone know of any headway in the area of sharing iPhoto libraries
completely? Not amongst family members, I want the entire photo library on
my work mac and on my home mac.

Does anyone have a solution for this, how are you managing this, if so?

Probably now quite what you want, but I used to use iPhoto Library
Manager to grab events from the iPhoto library on my home Mac and then
later merge them with the library on my work Mac (using a USB stick for
the transfer). iPhoto Library Manager preserves original and altered
versions of photos, comments, ratings, etc.

Since switching to Aperture, after an initial copy of the whole library
I now just export versions of the photos in a project* (into a folder
with the same name as the project) and import the folder into Aperture
on the other computer (which creates a project with the same name as the
folder). It took me awhile to realize that keeping comments added to
photos requires exporting "versions" rather than "originals", even if I
haven't made any changes to the photo itself. What still wouldn't be
transferred would be comments added to projects and albums containing
photos from multiple projects.

*"Project" in Aperture = "Event" in iPhoto.

Ned

By putting the library on portable hard drive, and plugging it into
whatever machine wants to use it. Clearly not ideal, but it's foolproof
and works perfectly.

Yes, I've thought about this as well, and it is a viable option. Only
problem is that my iMac at home does not have thunderbolt, but my laptop
and work Mac has it.

So basically, I would need a large capacity and really fast external (SSD?)
drive that is also small in size mobile. Preferably one that supports USB
as well.

Toshiba has a 1TB drive that's USB powered.

They also have a 3TB drive that requires a power wart.

You do the research and pick what works for you.

Get an USB3 enclosure and put whatever in it... Those can be found for
as little as $25 if you're lucky.

The requirements are:

1. SSD
2. bus-powered
3. at least 1TB
4. Thunderbolt + USB2

USB3 should do the job as it's backward compatible and many enclosures
can live on the power that the USB port supplies. Let the OP decide.

I've yet to find a product that fits my needs, however.

Why in the world would you need the external to be solid state? A
complete waste of money!

And your sig. delimiter wants a space just before the
CR/Return/paragraph maker.

Indeed. The bottleneck, if any, is the USB port, NOT the drive.

If your current non-SSD is fast enough, ....

We're talking about a TB drive, however, that supports USB as well.

I do not see how this answers my question about the "need" for an
external SSD (of any size).

Sorry; I see from another post that by TB you mean Thunderbolt, not
Terra Byte.
Again, my interest is in why you think a SSD as an external will do much
for you. Now, I also am reminded you're talking about iPhoto, a huge
library. It may be that it needs to constantly access the large single
file that would reside on your external HDD—and that'd justify the extra
$$ for speed.

I doubt that a TB-Firewire connection would be anything but fast enough.

Ah, of course, sorry for the confusion,

I upgraded my internal mechanical drive to a SSD drive for this very
reason, the internal iMac hard drive was too slow to adequately handle a
large iPhoto library.

> I doubt that a TB-Firewire connection would be anything but fast enough.

Firewire isn't fast enough, but Thunderbolt is.
