I doubt it's the engineer in you. Many engineers understand that a
question needs interpreting, sentences do not mean things in
themselves out of context of human users. Perhaps it's more the
autistic in you.

Just so you understand all the very brief responses that have already
started, the Terminal is the application that gives you access to the
Unix underpinnings of MacOS. If you already know about the UNIX bash
shell or have books on it, that would be a good place to start. There
are MacOS specific things that you have to learn, much as if you change
from one flavor of UNIX to another (e.g. Solaris to AIX or Ubuntu to
RedHat).

You've essentially asked "Is there a place I can learn what's going on
under the hood of my car?" There's lots going on under the hood and
many many books explaining the various parts and subsystems of the
mechanics of the internal combustion engine to the Haines Guide for your
particular make and model of car.

The question is "Are you sure you want to do that?"

If you have little or no computing background, it is probably a Bad
Idea(tm). If you are already know about computers and operating
systems, then go to the O'Reilley site and wander through their MacOS
books. Or find another vendor who's books you like. I prefer
O'Reilley. Your mileage may vary.

While you won't break much by messing with the command-line in the
Terminal, you may inadvertently break something by deleting stuff you
didn't intend to. If you decide to futz around with Terminal, make sure
you have a Time Capsule setup and taking hourly backups. Otherwise,
expect to loose stuff as you shoot yourself in the foot.

it's *easy* to break things with the wrong command or even just a typo,
without deleting anything at all.

Didn't anyone ever teach you that it's bad netiquette to reply only for
the purpose of correcting spelling/grammar?

Really? I'm one of the (many) authors of the original Netiquette manual, and
don't remember this being in there ...

Are you referring to RFC 1855?:
