Apple doesn't force anyone to use cloud services. Some billions of
people in the world do not use cloud services. As to how to get off the
Internet, it's easy. Turn off the router, turn off the WiFi, cancel
your account with your ISP. Dump the smartphone and the tablet. Resign
yourself to no more e-mail, no more software updates, no more software
purchases--they all involve putting information about yourself on
remote servers. Stop using Adobe Creative Cloud.

You keep missing the point that you are already far under the radar of
the FBI and other police and security services. Only paranoia could
persuade you otherwise.

Really? Because Google, Microsoft, Adobe, and a host of others have
failed to secure the data they store. You /cannot/ use the Internet
without exposing yourself to certain risks.

Just use one device for storing your contacts and calendars, be that an
iPhone or a good old-fashioned diary. Or none at all.

You might not *like* those choices, but they're certainly choices.

Ditto, but for how long until we're forced to upgrade due to newer

You missed the 'easiest' way: Shoot yourself... :-/

Seriously, you completely miss my point: Until now there were better
possibilities to keep my data private, and Apple deliberately changed
that. Provided that I don't invest considerable effort (and possibly
money) into setting up my own alternative solution. Everything you are
listing is a completely different story, and you know that.

You really don't understand my point, do you? Apparently for you data is
data, if some of one's data is available on the internet, why bother
with all data being there. Well, if that's the way you see, be my guest.
I don't share this opinion - and nothing you could ever say/write/...
will change that. I continue to believe in data privacy by default (yes,
I know, not a very popular point of view in the US, esp. not with the
major internet/cloud providers), and in the fact that *I* choose what to
put on the internet/cloud/...

Best regards,

Michael

There is no easiest. Getting off the Internet /only/ way to reduce the
amount of personal information you put on a remote server.

Michael Eyd:

Yes, I do not entirely understand what you said in the previous
paragraph.

My point is not that you should push your data into the so-called
"cloud." I say so-called because I like plain language, and "cloud"
sounds magical. I prefer to remember that this is a vulnerable hard
drive on a remote server (remote server, for short).

My point is that your private data is already there and there's nothing
you can do about it. Apple is just a tiny part of it; they're just one
of a dozen or more entities that know where I live, what kind of music
I buy (and full details of the credit card with which I buy it), my
annual income (advertisers need this information in order to target
me), some of my medical history, etc. In fact, it doesn't matter if you
don't have an Internet connection; your bank account is on-line. You
say you don't use on-line banking? Doesn't matter. Your account is on
an Internet-connected computer, and you can't have your bank move it to
a stand-alone, unconnected computer. Anyone in the world can go to a
web page hosted by the State of Maryland and find where I live, a
description of my house and property (370 sq. meters, .81 hectares),
and the tax value of my house. Adobe has recently advised me that I am
one of 39 million people whose personal data, including my credit-card
data, were stolen from its servers. Also stolen: the source code for
Photoshop, Acrobat, and other Adobe products. I cannot use Creative
Cloud without allowing Adobe to store my credit card and other
identifying data.

I assume that Google has either sold or inadvertently leaked my G-mail
account information; I get plenty of junk mail via my Google account,
but none from my iCloud or Verizon accounts.

And so that's the way it is. I'm not arguing that it's good or that one
should be anxious to participate, only that, even without an Internet
connection, without a computer, information about you is out there.

The world is not black/white alone, there are (were) possibilities to
control how much information is stored on the net about oneself.
Certainly not all is controllable, but so far I am/was able to keep at
least some amount of control. With more and more services moving from
local services into the cloud, this possibility vanishes more and more.

If you like that, be my guest. I don't.

Exactly.

> My point is that your private data is already there and there's nothing
> you can do about it.

And this point of your's is wrong - at least as far as I'm concerned
(might be different for you): *Some* of my data is already in the cloud
(though hardly at a single provider, at least not one I asked to collect
it), no doubt. But there is other information that I deliberately chose
not to put on the cloud or on any server in the internet. But if my only
chance of syncing and backing up my iDevices would be through iCloud,
this information would go to servers beyond my control - and I certainly
don't like that idea.

What's your point? That I leave traces whenever I'm online? No doubt.
That that means all the information about me can be found online?
Certainly not! I'm just not ready (yet?) to give in to the hype of
'everything online'. For me data privacy still holds a lot of value, and
I do (try to) choose the services I use rather deliberately, looking
(amongst other things) as well on how they treat my data, resp. trying
to leave as little data whereever possible.

That's as stupid a statement as one can find. My opinion. Would he want
to live in a house with glass walls, being targeted 24/7 by cameras so
that everybody (who cared) could trace his every move? I bet he wouldn't...

*****

You are so naïve! There is a parallel universe to the one that you can
see, and it's a product of Realpolitik in the 21st century. It's worth
remembering how we got to our state of widespread collection of
telephone metadata (thank goodness for digital telephony!). The
planners of the 9/11/2001 attacks against the United States worked for
several years in Western Europe to plan these attacks. They used
telephones, e-mail, and other forms of electronic communication without
being detected. U.S. allies in Western Europe and elsewhere decided
that they did not want to host such a planning session again. Thus they
instituted a program of electronic surveillance and a parallel program
of assisting the U.S. with its SIGINT collection. Such cooperation in
this parallel universe is not new; it's only public awareness that has
changed. It's no more complicated than that. Persons who think that the
average citizen of the EU is under electronic surveillance by their own
or an allied government have been grossly misled, or they are paranoid.
A number of European countries have arrested and dealt with known or
suspected terror suspects in the past 10 years or so. You cannot find a
single instance in which your garden-variety European has had her life
disrupted by this collection program. No disappearances, no raids on
housewives, no report that Frau Müller's little office affair with Herr
Weber has been revealed by the BfV.

As for collection of leadership-level communications, having a spy in
the leader's circle is as old as history, a time-honored tradiiton,
business as usual.

"...documents at the National Archives in London show how Winston
Churchill was sent a report on a 1940 private phone call between
President Franklin D. Roosevelt, Secretary of State Cordell Hull, and
Joe Kennedy, the U.S. ambassador to London, during which they discussed
options 'if Europe is overrun' by Nazi Germany."

OK, enough time wasted. Got to update Contacts and Calendar, which will
immediately go into the iCloud and propagate to my other Apple devices.

They don't target the insides of homes.

And I they will. Whatever the effect may be (there I'm not so optimistic...)

> "...public outcry here recently when it discovered that German state

There was at least an outcry - and it had some effect (if one can at
least somewhat trust the reports in the media).

> "As It Denounces U.S. Spying, Europe Delays Privacy Protection at Home"
> (NYT, Oct. 29, 2013)

Europe is working on it - and we are already today much better
concerning data privacy than the US law will (most probably) be in the
next 20 years.

> You are so naïve!

Oh, am I? Well, if you think so. Perhaps you should rather look into a
mirror to see somebody naïve...

Oh, and just because these programs exist mean that there is no
alternative? Means that it was correct to install them in the first
place? Means that they have to stay forever, that people cannot learn
that mistakes were made, and that they have to be corrected?

> Such cooperation in

Nice description of the status-quo. And, what are your conclusions?
Everything's fine, just continue?

> Persons who think that the
> average citizen of the EU is under electronic surveillance by their own

Or you are naïve... Sounds much more realistic to me...

> single instance in which your garden-variety European has had her life
> disrupted by this collection program. No disappearances,

Wrong. There were such cases, like Khaled Al-Masri. Never heard of? You
might want to check <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Khalid_El-Masri>.

> no raids on
> housewives, no report that Frau Müller's little office affair with Herr
> Weber has been revealed by the BfV.

And what is that supposed to prove? That 'interested parties' don't have
that information? Or that they (as of today) didn't bother to use it?
And if so, where is the guarantee that they might not decide differently
tomorrow, e.g. because Mrs. Mueller is organizing rallies against
American attacks in Pakistan and Afghanistan, or because Mr. Weber is
starting to climb the ranks in some German party, voicing opinions the
'interested parties' don't like? Or ...?

But I see, your motto is 'If you've nothing to hide, you've got nothing
to fear'.

> As for collection of leadership-level communications, having a spy in

Oh, and that makes it right? Stealing is certainly older, slavery is
older, murder is older. Are they therefore right?

That's OK, NSA isn't a problem, because they aren't targeting me or
reading my communications. It's ironic that Google should be up in arms
about NSA. It was Google that trespassed on my private street to
photograph my house, and that attempted to break into my wireless
networks at the same time. If I /had/ to trust Google or NSA I would
choose NSA because I know what their motives are, and they don't
involve me.
