Vim has tons of formatting definitions. I am sure there is one for USENET posts.

The place to ask would be comp.editors, I believe.

I think there is a way to follow the reference headers, if you have the
right newsserver and know the right slang-foo.

Why that? Multiple scores will just sum up. So you don't have to build
complicated "fits all at once" rules.

vim

vim does

read the shorcuts

Assuming the References lines are correct, it seems like you are doing
the right thing.

I'm going to read the docs and do some tests and report back here when I
get a minute.

I'm using vim with the "syntax on" option. Quoted content is colored;
though I'm not sure whether it's using slrn or some other color
settings. I am fairly familiar with vim's basic editing commands, and
don't mind using it for posting. GUI editors aren't suitable for me,
because I access slrn remotly through a terminal; otherwise, I'd
probably try TextWrangler.

Like you, I'm curious what better editors others out there might be
using.

Indeed. From the FAQ:

<http://slrn.sourceforge.net/docs/slrn-FAQ-3.html>

"How can I retrieve read articles from the same thread?

If you want to read the ``parent'' of the article you are currently
reading (e.g. because the author did not quote enough material to
understand his message), ``ESC p'' will attempt to find it, using the
``References'' header line.

It is also possible to find all ``children'' of a given article using
``ESC Ctrl-P'' (note that this does not work with all servers) and,
using a recursive combination of both, to reconstruct the entire thread
tree. This is done by pressing either ``ESC 1 ESC p'' or ``ESC 2 ESC p''
- the second alternative can be much faster, but the first is more
likely to find all articles even if some articles contain incomplete
``References''."

I'll probably end up memorizing both ESC p and ESC 1 ESC p! slrn seems
to be quite capable to me so far. It should be a suitable replacement to
MT-NewsWatcher, with even more functionality geared to my needs. I am
not displeased. : )

> That's it for now, I'll add more questions as they pop up :)

Same here. So far, so good.

How do you set the syntax on to always be on? just add "syntax on" to
the vimrc?

I really like using BBEdit, but I also like using vim. The trouble
with vim for me is the lack of inline spellchecking.

Yep, my .vimrc has:

set number
syntax on

I'm pretty sure where there is a will, there is a way. I found this
pretty quickly, but haven't tried it yet:

I use set number sometimes, but I don't see its utility in newsposts.

That's interesting. SpellBad is bright white text on white background.
There must be a way to change that. Black on white would work well.

Yeah. I edit configuration files and source code a lot with vim; so I just
keep it turned on all the time.

The way I read the syntax above is:

For articles in any news group, add 200 to the score if:
a. the References header ends with: @irc.sandman.net>
-or-
b. the References header ends with: <mr*@*individual.net>

So only direct responses to your own posts, where your message ID
appears at the very end of the references header (@irc.sandman.net>),
would get this score.

I'm not sure I understand why the second rule exists. Your message IDs
seem to be in the form: @irc.sandman.net. And I don't think I've seen
any messages that would match mr([^ ]*)@([^ ]*)individual.net. I do have
slrn applying scoring to messages replying to your @irc.sandman.net
message ID though. So I know that rule does work.

That was the intention, but didn't seem to work at the time.

That was my old, pre-slrn Message-ID regexp. It doesn't matter much, but in
the transition I wanted to filter them as well :)
