I just updated my iMac to OS 10.9 (Mavericks) and when I tried to
launche my newsreader MT-NewsWatcher v. 3.5.3 I recieved the error
message that it needed Open Transport to work. Open Transport was
removed in OS 10.9 is there some way to get MT-NewsWatcher to work
under OS 10.9?

no. open transport is gone.

Almost certainly not, since MT-NewsWatcher ceased development several
years ago.

The best way it could be made to work again is if someone has the
MT-NewsWatcher source code and is able to rewrite of its networking code
to use an API which is still supported in 10.9. Even that may be a short
term measure as it would still be a Carbon app, and I wouldn't like to
bet on Apple continuing to support Carbon in the next major version of
OS X.

(Apple dropping more major parts of Carbon would kill off many long
lived apps.)

The only other solution would be for a third party to write a network
library which implements the Open Transport API and translates the API
calls to some other networking API which is supported on 10.9. I think
the chances of this happening are pretty slim due to the amount of work
involved for a very small set of affected applications.

The only thing killing off Crayon is Microsoft Office all Office apps
except Outlook are still carbon based in fact Word is till Binary. Core
with XML wrapper. When some one can Prod Microsoft to switch to cocoa
based the Carbon will die a swift death.

wtf does that even mean?

what is crayon?

microsoft word is linked against both carbon and cocoa, which is not
all that unusual. apple mail does the same thing.

carbon will go away when apple decides it's not in their interest to
support it anymore. there are still some parts of the os itself that
use carbon, so they *can't* kill it off yet.

Noticed the same thing myself, so I'm at a loss here. Unison is "ok" at
best. I already miss tons of features from MT-NewsWatcher. Not to
mention the syncing (via .newsrc file and Dropbox) of my group status...

Maybe we need to get Panic to update Unison for us "hardcore" users?

I'd rather that MT-NW be upgraded for Mavericks.

AIUI, Simon Fraser has stopped working on it. Anyone any ideas there?

It seems the domain is down even, so it's fair to assume that there will be no more updates to MTNW.... Pity.

Hmm, I think it was up last week. I wonder if he's been getting

Otherwise, it's an odd coincidence. :)

What domain? Simon's website at:

http://www.smfr.org/mtnw/

is accessible.

However, the "Last changed" date is from Sept. 2006.

For a very poor definition of "works". Right now, what's working for me
is reading news on one of my older Macs. I might go back to slrn
(preferable to MacSOUP). Only wish there were an easy way to export
MT-NW filters and such.

> For a very poor definition of "works".

What's wrong with MacSOUP? I've been happily using it since 1996.

I still prefer offline to online newsreading and I don't care about
binary groups. I haven't needed to do the equivalent of syncing newsrc
because I use one computer for News.

I can only think of two outright complaints:

MacSOUP is still using antique file system APIs which are limited to 31
characters, so I have to truncate the filename for any articles I want
to save externally.

Its notifactions are also annoying, popping up a system-wide alert which
interrupts me, instead of bouncing the Dock icon.

It's an offline reader. This is just silly when I have a 30/10 mbit
connection to the Internet. Offline? If I'm offline for more than a
couple of minutes I'm on the phone.

Right, but that is a complete non-starter for me.

And I use at least three.

Which is pretty insane considering those APIs were deprecated in ...
2003? Earlier?

I prefer the offline mode of operation myself, even in a supposed always
on and fast internet era. Though in reality there are plenty of times
I'm without internet access on the go. Plus offline means everything's
instant. No waiting a second or two, or sometimes longer for an article
to load. I like snappy response times, and you can't beat offline for
that :-)

Each to their own, but why would this affect you? It's not stopping you
from doing almost everything you would with an online reader (excepting
live search and reading of unsubbed groups, for which I keep MT-NW
around for).

I'll agree it's not super easy to sync MacSOUP's settings folder across
the internet as it can easily be over a gigabyte in size, depending on
your subscribed groups (a lot in my case) and rate of purging read
and/or old articles (slow for me, as I'm often way behind in certain
groups). But it's not a problem across a LAN, and still doable across
the internet if you've a decent data cap. DropBox and numerous other
solutions can handle this for you.

A minor hassle IME. Plus you can simply lock articles inside MacSOUP.
There's no pressing need to save any articles you don't need to access
outside of MacSOUP.

Then you probably already know what's wrong with MacSOUP. If you
haven't followed the multiple threads that have come up in the past, you
can go back and read the points I have previously made:

My personal UDP list: 127.0.0.1, localhost, googlegroups.com, theremailer.net,
    and probably your server, too.
