#8881 — trying to run Tiger X.4.11 on separate drive

Subjecttrying to run Tiger X.4.11 on separate drive
Message-ID<4f7bcc82$0$11836$c3e8da3$12bcf670@news.astraweb.com>
My regular OS is SL X.6.8, but I tried running Tiger X.4.11 on a
separate hard drive so I could use an earlier free version of Crossover
to run a Windows program. [I'm an instructor at a community college and
need to run a CLEA astronomy program so I know what the astro lab
students will be facing. The trial period for the current version of
Crossover has expired, and since I have no other use for it I don't want
to purchase it.]

Since I still have Tiger on a separate hard disk on my Mac, I thought I
could just restart from that disk and use the earlier Crossover in that
disk's Applications folder. But when I try to start that Crossover,
nothing at all happens. Has installing SL on a separate hard disk
stepped on something and broke it, or did installing the new Crossover
under SL munged some settings? I thought using separate disks for the
two OSs would prevent this sort of interference.

Suggestions would be appreciated.

I think you have to say what Mac you are using, what year, model etc.

It's a Dec. 2006 Mac Pro running at 2.667 GHz. Must admit it never
occurred to me that might make a difference.

You are able to start OK from the Tiger HD? Everything else works
fine? The app that won't fire is the app itself and not an alias? It
looks the real thing in Get Info? It used to work fine once from that
HD on your present Mac?

When you start from the SL HD, is everything kosher when you verify
the Tiger HD?

Do you know that there is the excellent, very sophisticated and free
VirtualBox that you can use on your SL HD and run Windows programs. I
use this and it is very good indeed.

Just another thought: Your old Crossover may need Classic, it may be a
version that needs OS9 and you may not have all the necessaries now to
fire up 9 in Classic. Perhaps various files from your System 9 have
gone missing and you have forgotten?

That's right, nothing at all that I've noticed.

Yes, tho I haven't had reason to try everything else. But I was given
another suggestion: re-install the old Crossover under Tiger. I'll try
that and report back when I get to it.

>> When you start from the SL HD, is everything kosher when you verify

Not sure what you mean. How do I "verify the Tiger HD"?

>> Do you know that there is the excellent, very sophisticated and free

>> use this and it is very good indeed.

That wouldn't help me, since I don't have any Windows OSs under which to
run Crossover. And I do use VirtualBox, to run eComStation, so I'm
familiar with it.

No, the old Crossover doesn't need Classic, since it ran fine on Tiger,
and I never had Classic to begin with.

Thanks for the suggestions.

Yes, good idea. But check your disk first, see below.

In your Utilities folder, there is an app called Disk Utility. It
checks volumes for file integrity among other things. It also has a
permissions check (which is only rarely useful). If there is a problem
needing repair, and you start from the disk you are investigating, it
will only verify and report problems. It is best to start from another
disk (HD, DVD, USB whatever) and check the one you are wondering
about.

In other words, you start from the volume on which you have your SL OS
and open DU. You then look for the volume (in your case it is on a
separate HD) that you have your Tiger OS on. And you click the verify
or repair button.

Thank you for your suggestion and instructions. In fact the disk did
need repair, and DU seemed to have done so successfully. Now to check
how booting to Tiger behaves.

On a different topic, yesterday I heard on the news that now the Mac is
also vulnerable to viruses of various sorts. Any recommendations for
good anti-virus software?

Nevermind on the AV topic - I just read all the posts about it and they
told me all I need to know.

So you start from the separate disk with 10.4.11 installed?
What do you mean by "nothing at all happens"? Nothing bouncing in the
dock? No log entries?

Should not.

That is also my understanding ;-)
